vister
have you decided which camera you would like to purchase, or look into yet? I'd say the "m's" have it. not only are they less than a 100 bucks, but you sacrifice absolutely nothing with these cameras! i've got 2 D40's, 1 outfitter 5.0 IR, a bit spendier, 2 outfitter 5.0 flash, and 1 stealthcam. by the way, outfitter models are cabelas exclusive5 cameras are moultries. and I have zero complaints, having some of them for over two years out 24/7/365. InTheNorthwoods
Be aware, with trail cameras you more often than not get what you pay for. You can try and save money up front but pay the additional costs very quickly once its in the field (batteries, gas going to check the camera to change the batteries, frustration of no pictures or poor quality, camera not working and having to return it). I've been through it all, I have now settled on the Moultrie IR's as happy medium. They are reliable, take better quality pictures than needed, and the battery life is great with a price that won't break the bank at right around $200. I have had enough cameras in the lower price point ($100 area) to know that I will never waste my money on those cameras again.
Froggy4371
I have a Moultrie D-40 and love it. I have over 350-375 pic's in the last 2 months of deer and have not changed the batt's yet. I pulled the card last night and switched it out and it showed 50% batt life yet. I will probally change the batt's when I go out Friday.Froggy
Gofishleech
I have a couple of the I-40's and I will be looking for something different next time. On both the units the lcd screen is out and they want $40 to fix them each. The cameras work great aside from that, great battery life and easy but wont buy another unless they have a recall on the lcd screens. This is a problem with many of the units and I have recomended them many times but not anymore.

This is a problem with many of the units and I have recomended them many times but not anymore. I have noticed the LCD screen going out a little bit on a 5.0 IR (Cabelas) that I have, its just over a year old. So far I have just operated the camera without worrying about that, but I might have to look into that problem. The other two that I have are holding up nicely. What has Moultrie told you as to why its happening? I can't believe they are asking for $40 to fix it if its a production defect.
Gofishleech
The info I got was from another board, lots of people haveing the same problem. I have not personaly contacted them but will be. As you I have just been uesing the camera as is but on one of thm the time and dates is off and I cant change it. What bothers me most is I have recomended to my friends that are now haveing the same problem, moultrie should fix them for nothing!! jigginjim
Thanks guys, It helps to know issues from fellow hunters on here. You can read replies on websites but don't know how much is staged or just to promote their item? I would love to get a smartscouter cam ($700), But my wife may use my deer hunting knife to trim me like a buck. So I'll settle for something around $100 -140. She still mite slam my n*** between to bricks. She thinking "How many steaks she could by at the store."
sticknstring
The new WGI cams are reportedly pretty solid and cheap. The IR4 retails for under $100. I have heard they eat batteries pretty good but if it'll just be out for a few months... no harm there. Does a guy buy two WGI's or another Capture IR? Dilemma! HOT SPOT
I love my moultrie's I have tons of great pics and then I am sure I have missed a few to. Overall for 110 Bucks you can have a good camera with 2 chips for it so all you have to do is swap them and enjoy them pics.I do have one that is 3 yrs old and is starting to act up on me. It will take a pic and then shut off? any Ideas its almost like it shutts its self off. Other than that Well worth the Money that cam I bet have taken over 3500 pics in that three years

You will be much happier and the actual cost will probably be less in the end. (See battery life).
vister
agreed. i've never had an issue with flash spooking game, but i love the IR camera i've got. for 200 bucks you can get an IR moultrie 4.0 good quality pics, and with the savings on battery life, in time it will have paid for itself! over the cost of the D40 that is. normal usage will get you 150 days battery life, vs 60, or maybe 90. many of my buddies have one or several of the moultrie 5.0 outfitter IR cameras, a cabelas exclusive. they go for 230 bucks i believe. for the money, battery life, and picture quality, they can't be beat! 2 of my buddies had issues with their brand new crappyback capture IR's, returned them, got the above camera i mentioned, 20 bucks back in their pockets, and love them even more. Its hard to beat the laser aim function on a moultrie camera!
