Crazy Crappie!

Went out last night, got everything set up, got the camera down and ready to fish. Clipped on one of my "depth bombs" that you clip on your jig to check depth and dropped it down to see if my camera was pointed in the right direction...lucky me it was pointed correctly and on my camera I see my depth bomb go by, I pull it up so I can see it on the screen and set my slip knot to correct depth, then out of nowhere when I am about to reel it up a big crappie comes in and nails it! I didnt want to lose my depth bomb so I tried to pull it up slow without setting the hook, I fought this thing for about 10 seconds and almost got it up the hole before it let go and gave me my depth bomb back! Hard to tell by the camera but it must have been a good sized fish to nail this heavy depth bomb and hold on for 10 seconds. Of course the fish will hit that but i had a hard time catching a fish until about an hour later when it started getting dark.

I remeber a thread about this a couple months ago, I have heard of pike or other predator fish hitting these things but I never thought I would see a panfish do it!

I had a similar thing happen to me. I was setting up my deadstick for the walleyes just had a plain red hook with a weight on top to set it right. When I was bringing it up I saw a mark come up fast and smack it, and I tried to set the hook with my hand but didn't get it.

It seems that when those big crappies are ready to eat, they eat...doesn't matter what it is. Last summer I caught one that was just shy of 15" while bass fishing with a 10" power worm, then a couple days later hit another one that was just over 14" fishing with a 3/4 oz. bass jig and a 5" salty craw. It was quite a pleasant surprise reeling those big boys in!

Last weekend was the same thing in brainerd lakes area. Just to the lake, dropped a TINY hook down with a waxy and as soon as it went past the ice, WHAM - was not a crappy, but rather quite a big northern...the line snapped before I could even grab the pole. Wish it was still a northern season
