What standard equipment do you carry with to your stand?

BLACKJACK

Recommended Posts

Its Friday, I'm sure lots of people will be checking out the Forums, thought I'd start another 'what do you do' topic.

Going thru my pockets of the clothes that I always wear bowhunting, I have my licence, an emergency whistle, a&&hole string, rope to pull my bow up with, grunt call, a couple of bowhangers (seems like I'm always leaving them in the tree, so I like to have a spare), safty harness, cotton gloves, two head nets, one full in case the mosquitoes are bad and one with a face opening, a couple packs of the chemical hand warmers, a small pair of binocs, and my knife is attached to my belt. I sometimes carry a fanny pack that has a fancy bowhanger in it, and now I've added a rattling bag to that pack.

Its amazing what you can fit in all the pockets of the army fatigues!

Good luck to all this weekend!

I have a backpack, but generally only use it during gun season, when I add a camera, tp, thermos, snacks, water, towel, stocking cap, extra gloves, shells, extra knife, etc.

I have a knife & my gutting (pelvic) saw on my belt.

I usually carry my outer layer of clothes this time of year & colder, as well as a small cushion if hunting a permanent stand. Any stands that I need a safety strap in already have one in the tree.

In my pockets I carry:

gutting gloves
small flashlight
camo jersey gloves
hat with headnet
balaclava (I think that's what they call them.)
bow lift rope (if stand doesn't have one)
spare bow hook
grunt call or two
can call
rattle box
camo hankerchief
scents & wicks starting about now
handwarmers if it's cold enough

I carry a big set of binos if I'm on a stand with long views, never liked any small ones I've seen & I'm too cheap to spend much on them. I figure any deer I need the binos for has to get a lot closer before it really matters bowhunting.

I'd say I carry my license too, but 50% of the time it's still in my truck & another 25% it's been forgotten at home... Good thing my brother-in-law had a bonus tag Saturday night & was willing to use it or I'd had to have run home to get mine.

delmuts, you've mentioned that you do exclusively ground hunting. Can you expand on how you pick your spot, is it prepared before season or do you just go to an area and hunker into the bushes? Do you use a camo tent or screen? do you carry a chair? Are you shooting thru a small opening or are you behind a tree or brush and planning on shooting as they come around the tree?

Since I am never more than a 10 minute walk to my truck, I hunt with the theory of less is more, my list is short.

release
call(s)

When I shoot a deer I walk back to my truck anyway, change out of my hunting clothes and stash the bow, get the knife, flaslight and whatever else I need, this forces me to wait at least a half hour before I attempt to track the deer, and I don't have all that unnecessary equipment with me while I'm dragging out a deer. I like to travel light. But if where hunting big woods with alot more foot travel, I would carry the same stuff everyone else has posted about.

I had to cut back on what I carry. I packed more for bowhunting than when I went on vacation for a week. I have one of those huge fanny packs that have shoulder straps.
It came with a built in water bag with sippy hose. grin.gif That's nice because I don't have to carry bottles of water with me anymore.
I carry:
head net
bandana
extra gloves
scents and scent killer
candy
rope
extra knife& sharpener
gps
cell phone
map if I'm in a new area.
matches
extra flashlight

my bow and quiver. wear everything but gloves, keep them in my pockets. sometimes a grunt or bleat. not a knife. figure if i shoot a deer it gives the deer more time to bleed out before i take off tracking. bow hangers in the stand, along with my haul line. the rest stays in the shack and need to walk to get it.

MDEILY, why are you so shocked about the lack of range finders? First off their spendy, the good ones are $100+. Secondly, 98% of the bowshots are under 30 yards, the combination of flat shooting bows and easy estimation at close ranges makes a rangefinder a luxory item. In my case, anything out to twenty yeards I'll shoot with my first pin, if I estimate its 25-30 I'll use my 30 yard pin, and I won't shoot past that. And I practice range estimation when I go for my noon walks. I think a range finder would be more of a requirement out west hunting antlelope and elk, but then you had better practice and be confident past 30 yards.

Just my thoughts, but I know that I'll be buying some trail cameras and a Double Bull blind and maybe a decoy before I buy a range finder.

The only reason was after 10 responses he was the only 1. I thought more people used them. I hunt several stands and I recheck every stand once I am settled in to verify yardage. With all the trees around I find myself asking was that one 20 yards or 30 yards. This way I know for sure where I am at. By all means no offense was meant I just am shocked. I read alot of threads on this site and many times I hear the ethical hunter owes it to the game to be responsible and make the clean kill. I also feel this way and think a range finder is very important to achieve this. Just my 2 cents.

I'd have to agree with BlackJack, although I'd like one & it's closer to the top of my list I don't have one either. I'd be more inclined to buy more portable stands. You can never have too many I don't think.

Mostly stand hunt for longer durations or in similar spot for couple of days so, a moderate day pack with:

tp

Pee bottle

scents/wicks

calls

small binocs

extra release

gloves

extra knife

rope/haul line

rattling antlers

string

liscence

headlamp

safety harness

head cover/net

water/snack

Safety blanket

First aid items

Extra clothing appropriate for day

If first time in steps/stand, pruning saw, clippers

Whew!! Never listed stuff out. Seems like a bunch of stuff, but I have found the need for all of the items at some point.
