Nick (nsnutter) probably just forgot you can't keep them yet for a little while. We only target Catfish mostly so it can slip our minds. He would never keep anything outside of the season I can assure you.

If he was fishing on the Mississippi he could have kept them, maybe thats what he was thinking.

I got into some nice kitties today.. Had to work hard for them though. I ended up right in the wood for these kitties. Lost a lot of gear but found where they are all hiding nice and tight.

Fished into the evening and dark looking for a flatty... Well, here goes.

At about 9:45 I got a huge kitty on the line, took me into a snag but I kept on him and was able to get it out.. then into the current and the fight was on.. I was all by myself and this was not going to be good. It was kicking my hind-end!!! Now I also had my minnow bucket looped on the back of the boat by the motor lock.. Any how, the goliath came around to the back of the boat and was determined to get in the motor but insead go into the minnow bucket rope and some how flipped the loop off the motor and down river goes my minnow bucket........... but it floats right....?... Not when it goes into a log jam.. down it went ... sigh.. Back to fighting the FLAT..I was parked right on top of a big jam, and I had about a 20 foot circle around me that appeared to be clear but trees and dead heads all around me.. After about 15 minuets, my arms were, I'm telling ya, were smoked... well needless to say, it got back to the motor again and cut my 50# tough line. ... MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!

Of course I should be just happy I got to fight a Flatty for the first time this year but not knowing how big it was is eating me up.. All I know is it was a very good sized kitty... It was a 20-25 min fight by myself in a 14 foot Lund, in the dark... That has cluster written all over it...Worst part was I had no bait now with the bucket under that log jam.. I could not even try to renig myself.. sigh..

Any how, it was still fun. I will just have to go find it again one of these nights.

I hear ya, it was quite a let down.. Can you see the wood I was fishing in.. the cats over here have been very stubborn and the only place I have been able to find them is right in the wood. park up in the wood jam and walk on logs or drop big ball jigs down into the holes.. It is a lot of fun and totaly getting away from the traditional fishing..

You know, I have seen a few people doing just that, walking along logjams and dropping jigs down in the holes, just haven't given it much thought ... Perhaps I'll have to try it some slow afternoon! Sounds a bit risky ... any advice?

I wouldn't do it. Not worth risking one's life over a fish.
A small part of me is saying, 'c'mon, live a little' ... but the vast majority of me is in wholehearted agreement with what you said lol

Those snags are just so unpredictable. It would be way too easy for a log to crack you in the head or fall down and hit your head and down you go. IMO, I'd rather not put friends or rescue team in that situation. The last thing I'd like to hear is a fellow fisherman going under....just keep your wits about ya'. On a related note, I saw an old In-Fisherman episode where Al & Ron Lindner were fishing for cats from shore. They were targeting Channel's in snags using these 13ft. rods with line attached to the rod (no reel). I think they were using a heavy jig to vertically present the bait in various holes within a snag....moving up and down the shoreline. It looked to be an effective method for shore fishing during the low water months. Anyways, I bring that up because it might work as a technique for getting into those spots that your unable to cast to. Good luck out there. smile

Dont get me wrong, I dont just wonder around on the jams. Only the huge big logs by the boat. I never get only a few steps from my boat and I make sure the log is real big and dry. Other wise I fish out of the boat into the jams.

Best advise is go heavy duty. When you get one one, Set and pull like there is no tomorrow to get them up and out of the jam. Just like the Bass guys do in the heavy weeds. Start out fishing the very front edge of the jams, drop your bait down slow feeling for snags until you find a clear spot and look for slack water behind it that means the kitties will have a spot to hang out right there.

Thanks man! Perfect advice ... I know of a few very sturdy treefalls that have resulted in some promising looking snags ... Maybe I'll give er a shot sometime, although the cane pole idea would be fun as well. I have often wondered what it would be like to land a nice flat on a fly rod...

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
