Is it legal to catch a fish by your hand or not?? Example found some fish in open water by shore and you could reach out and grab them if you wanted to is that legal. I read the rules and they dont really say. it is on a lake they open up to liberilized fishing every year. And they are alredy dieng.

I wouldn't see why it would be illegal. You are not netting, using lights, snaring, dynamite, or any other means other than your hands. You should be praised for the efforts of catching fish in that manor(with your bare hands). If the DNR thinks that it would be illegal, there is something wrong with the legal system!!!!

If it is open to liberalized fishing - sometimes referred to as promiscuous fishing - you can take them anyway you want (except by explosives I think). I know that netting them is legal but only with certain kinds of nets. See the page Sparc posted.

A few years ago Otter Lake in Ramsey/Anoka Counties was dying off and the fish were roiling around on the surface of holes. Mostly bullheads when I saw it but I had read that people were taking them by the bucketfull.

where I grew up we used to spear a lot of carp that would make their way down the creek in the spring into the main lake. There was a small [PoorWordUsage] in the creek, and below it you would see huge muskie that were very lethargic after spawning. We were spearing about 20yds from the big girls, and it was like they didnt even see us. I would hate to think someone would net/or grab a big fish post spawn. Just my 2 cents

Rules who needs them? I don't break many laws but I'm willing pay the fine, clean the fish, and keep you safe by hanging on to your ankles if you come out to the spearing house. Maybe a bungee cord. I'll spear the pike. You can bungee from the top bunk and grab the eyes. The fish will never know what hit them. laugh

If open to liberalized fishing, then yes it would be legal. If it is not open to liberalized than it would not be a legal means.

JeffB, hard to know if you're kidding, but you should never advise someone to break the law and it is not allowed on here.

If you think you're willing to pay the fine, I can guarantee that the fine goes up per fish and there are extra fines tacked on if you take more than a certain amount for "gross overlimit" fines. Not to mention "trophy charges" if they are over a certain size.

The only way to get the right answer is to talk to you local CO. The DNR office will be open on tuesday for regular questions, but you can call your CO anytime. Their numbers are listed on the DNR's webpage.

I was totally kidding. I wouldn't be to worried about a per fish fine for someone diving in from the top bunk with a bungee cord on the ankles. P.S. I am an angler I don't even have a hole larger than 10" in my house. I thought it should have been obvious I was joking and I added the smiley face on the end to try and make sure.

Looking back you better talk to catfisher to cause I'm not to sure you can legally bob for fish. He may also be breaking the rules. Seems like about as reasonable as bungee jumping for them in January. Seriously though I didn't mean to offend or encourage any breaking of the fish and game laws. If you aren't used to a sarcasticy dry sense of humor you might not get some of my posts. So I wont encourage any one to ice fish with their hands and will not allow anyone to fish by such means in my house since this would be ilegal on my lake for walleye. But if such fisherman wishes me to drill them a hole outside my fish house. I may still drill them a hole and not report them. I think the fish would survive such a miss step, bus said fishermans frozen fingers may not.

the last 4 posts have me belly laughing.....Your 1st post was funny about the guy bungee cord jumping from the top bunk...then Powestroke gives you [PoorWordUsage] about supporting breaking the law...he obviosly didn't read your post and then you come back and defend yourself....Classic!!!

I don't know anything about these promiscuous fishing lake situations so maybe eyes really do swim right to the surface near dead on a lake that is winter killing. The whole idea just put a funny picture in my head and I had to share it. Now I am curious so I have to ask the original posters. Is this a winter kill situation you are talking about, are the fish half dead and if so do they still taste good? Not to knock it but the whole idea sounds weird to me. Sorry for ruffling your feathers powerstroke, but check out pages 4 and 5 on the bald eagle forum. Now there is a good place to put your reprimanding skills to work I even had to do a little myself.

I was deadly serious!!! Do NOT bob for bullheads!!!And I usually try to grab panfish right behind the front of the dorsal...( grabbing them behind the back dorsal equals definate face splash ) Bob early, in front of the target...Otherwise you could end up looking like an one-who-thinks-I-am-silly with a face full of lake water....

Thanks for the reply catfisher. Now that I know you are serious I have some questions. Are you sure bobbing for fish is legal and if so do you think I will still be able to gain the skills needed if my teeth are very cold sensitive. Maybe I should wait and try this off the dock in the summer when the sunfish and water is a little warmer.

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
