January - February for Yotes

Recommended Posts

I am a newbie frustrated varmit hunter in SW Mn trying for my first coyote or fox.

So far during the month of December I have made 9 attempts with only one yote called in who saw me before I could get a shot off the trusty 22-250. I am hunting in good locations with lots of sign, using Randy Anderson Primos calls as well as an electronic homemade e-caller (plans from nodak HSOforum). Question is does it get any easier in January or February? I never thought it would be this tough....

Yep, easier, but you did have one coyote come in on 9 stands. That is not too bad for a beginner. I made 12 or 15 before I stumbled into one. Randy makes great videos and makes it look very easy too. Play the wind, it took me a long time to understand sometimes a great stand location with a bad wind is not a good idea. You got busted by your first coyote, who doesn't. Don't over analyze stuff, keep the wind in mind, try a different calling sequence and get back out there.

that is pretty good seeing one in 9 sets. keep at it you learn from your mistakes.

you can go and buy some white bed sheets and cut a hole in the center of it and wear it that way or just buy light weight snow covers to go over your normal camo and you will be set. i think i bought my jacket and pants for $40 and i can put them on over my snow pants and jacket.

Like everybody else has said dress warm and keep at it. We called 5 stands last night and saw nothing until set #4. 1,2,3, and 5 were all dry. Stretch and I hunted hard and he took me back to a spot that i crapped the bed on last year by missing a fox. last night i called in a pair with Jackrabbit distress. I would have like to shoot the back one first, but the female came charging in right to me. I shot her at 48 steps. Now in a couple of days the full moon come and things should get better it the weather stays cold like this. Good luck to everybody this full moon.
