jiffy or strikemaster?

With the jiffy you have to lean about 100 lbs of your weight on it to cut well even with a new blade. The jiffy is quite heavy too.

Not even remotely true... I dont have topush down on my jiffy and I drill holes as fast as any strikemaster.

Weight? So whats a 5lb weight difference when your auger is "bullet proof"?

I wanted a Jiffy real bad and my buddy had just bought one (A Jiffy 3hp) and then won a Strikemaster Lazer Express 2hp at the brainerd contest. I bought the Strikemaster from him and was very plesantly suprised. We had a contest the first time I took it out on the ice and whooped him drilling a hole. He wanted to trade, and I said no way. He has had his in the shop 4 times (carb kits, re-ring ect), me 0 and Im finnaly having to replace a couple parts after ten years. Im sold on Strikemaster, plus its a local Minnesota company so your supporting the home team with it.

Same with mine, it pulls itself through the ice. And the extra weight comes from the steel they use as opposed to plastic used in the SM.

I got my new SM StrikeLite and this thing is awesome. The 5# is HUGE. The guys that say different don't know because they don't own one. Cuts smooth and with proper care the plastic auger shouldn't be an issue. If you are prone to somehow breaking everything you own, maybe stay with the "bullet-proof" tank they call a Jiffy. I take care of my stuff and feel confident this new one should last quite a while. If I have any mechanical issues, I know for certain I'm not going to be stuck waiting for customer service.

I got a Strikemaster i've had for 10+ years thats never gave me a problem. Whereas the Jiffy's my father had when i was younger were nothing but a pain. Just my opinion.... Go out on the lake and look at what guys are using, i will bet it's Strikemaster 2-1

How hard are you on your equipment. If you are a weekend angler a SM will probably work fine for you. If you like to fish hard and use an auger for what it is designed to be used for get a JIFFY. I Know quite a few people who had the handles brake when the SM was dropped or sliding around in the truck. I bought my Jiffy in 1993 and changed the plug once just for good measure. If you have to lean down on any auger for crying out loud sharpen your blades! Thats a no brainer!

Personally I think either of the engines are fine. What I have learned (the hard way) is blades are what is important. If you fish dirty ice or have a house you leave out and reopen holes, I say a chipper blade is the way to go. I just take both. Always good to have a back up plan.

I wanted a jiffy bad for my first auger and didnt think or know any better. went into walmart one day and they had a mag 2000 8 1/4" there for 168 bucks after tax so i bought it . should have bought two and given it to my dad for that price. since then i have added a 6" lazer auger to it wow is that fast. for chasing crappie or perchin on mille lacs dont need anything bigger. plus its my way of protesting those widowmakein 10" holes they are broodle on a shin bone.

I bought a jiffy because my dad, my uncle, and other people that have been around alot longer than i have had jiffy's, and had never had to buy a new one. Some maintenance here and there and a new set of blades.

I bought a 3hp 9" stx, and struggled with it for 2 years. it had no power once it got to the ice. . . after a few repair bills and enough frustration i wrote a e-mail to jiffy stating my problem, and how much money i had spent on trying to get it fixed. A few days later a pre-paid box showed up at my door with the instructions to place the powerhead and copies of the repair reciepts in and send it to them.

2 days later i recieved my powerhead back and reimbursement for the repair costs and a explanation of what they had found was wrong with it. It wasnt anything that could be adjusted or cleaned, it was a manufacturing defect in an internal engine part. They apologized for the inconveince and said if i ever had problems again to let them know.

Hows that for customer service! It now cuts amazing and i couldn't be happier with it.

yeah, it's kind of a Ford vs. Chevy thing for sure... smile

I have an 8" LazerMag and love it. Never had a problem with it in 6 years and have drilled hundreds of holes with it. Maybe the handles/frame are not as durable as the Jiffy. But then I don't beat the tar out of my equipment. Just my $.02...

Bless the Tecumseh company!! My recoil went out on my strikemaster, and I called them at about 4:15 yesterday and ordered a new unit...I got it, mounted it tested it,...runs like a charm now,...and was home to catch the 5:00 news this evening...about 50 bucks and I'm back in buisness!!!!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
