BuckKiller
I was reading a book that I got for christmas and it said that deer are not strict vegitarians. They will catch fish (in shallow streams), birds and beetles. Anyone else not know that?
Grant Pearson
I knew that. I actually saw a picture of a deer with a small trout in its mouth. very interesting. It was in a book copyrighted in the early 80's, so it wasn't photoshopped.

Grant Pearson
I have also seen deer lick, and sometimes eat off of a gut pile from another deer..... I thought it was quite strange.
Mark Christianson
I had a trail cam set over a pile of duck carcasses this fall, and the deer were nosing in it a lot. I got one pic with feathers sticking out of the side of the mouth of one that was chewing on one.

Grant Pearson
hmm i guess a new way to bait deer dnr cant get you then if you want to hunt over a gut pile waiting for other deer to show up and chow down, go right ahead. It's not their first choice of food, but they occasionally (key word) will goto a gut pile.

fishermn
I saw pics of a deer eating fish guts that were left out on the rocks (for the birds) up in the BWCA. I woulda never expected that! Also, on North American Whitetail TV this year the good Dr. did a segment on gutpiles and their effect on other deer. Deer were actually the first ones to show up many times. They would eat a little and move on, leaving the rest for the birds and other predators... spivak
My friend did his graduate work on grassland nesting birds in Montana. Deer were a significant predator of grassland nests. They'd eat the eggs whenever they'd find them.
