Leeches for ice?

Does anyone ever attach a leech or artificial leech to a swedish pimple or spoon for walleye during ice fishing?

Not me. Usually a minnow head, maybe a minnow tail or a whole minnow. Leeches typically don't work well in cold water.

I might be wrong but they are probly hard to find unless you have some sitting around. I have not been able to find any since the middle of september

Good luck finding them, noone sells them this time of year, they just freeze and die in cold water. Same thing with crawlers

Attaching an artificial leech may not be a bad idea. That's definitely thinking outside the box and I like it!

We saved some leeches a few years back to do just this.

The leeches once attached to the lure hook and placed into the water recoiled and balled up. They were pretty well balled up in the bait container before we attached them but seemed to liven up with a little massage before hooking them.

Like I mentioned though, once they hit the water they balled back up. Dropping them down the hole and jigging for awhile and reeling the line back up, the leech was still balled up.

This was our experience with using leeches and we have also tried artificial leeches. In my personal opinion I will use what is available, ie, minnows, mousies, maggots etc,etc.

i knew ya couldnt find live ones anywhere but a artificial berkley leech i thought would maybe work? ill try in on minnewaska this weekend and let ya know how it goes.

I bought some 5" gulp leeches to try on a drop shot rig this winter for eyes. I have yet to actually try it though.

The only time I used them, was when we kept the water in the minnow bucket colder than the water in the lake. We put ice in with the leeches and used them that was the only time they didnt curl up. Even then some of them curled right up. I dont know if it work any better than a minnow though!

once the water temp dips below 55 degrees, leeches become ineffective due to them balling up. useing them during the hard water season would be a waste of time and money, IMO

I was wondering the same thing last weekend while fishing in the hour window I catch a few in so didnt try. If you have any luck useing them let us know. maybe ill give one a try today during feeding time an see what the results are.
