VIKES BUILD SOME PROTECTION INTO ALLEN DEAL

Posted by Mike Florio on April 23, 2008, 5:04 p.m.

As we noted last week when the talk of a Jared Allen trade first surfaced, any team acquiring Allen’s rights will be taking a huge risk. With two DUIs in 2006, which prompted a two-game suspension in 2007, Allen is a mimosa binge away from facing a serious suspension, and possibly some real jail time.

The problem is that the 2006 amendments to the Collective Bargaining Agreement prevent teams from attempting to recapture significant chunks of bonus money in the event of a player default. Instead, teams may only target a portion of the signing bonus proration for the year in which, for example, a suspension is imposed.

The Vikings addressed this problem by pushing half of the guaranteed money into 2009 and 2010, and by making the guarantee applicable to injury only, for now.

Here are the numbers.

Allen receives a signing bonus of $15,500,069, and a base salary of $750,000 in 2008.

In 2009, he gets a base salary of $7.75 million. A whopping $7.5 million of that amount is guaranteed against injury only; as of the first day of the 2009 league year, it is guaranteed for skill, too.

In 2010, Allen will receive a base salary of $6.38 million and a roster bonus of $8 million. The roster bonus is guaranteed for injury only; it becomes guaranteed for skill as of the first day of the 2009 league year.

Allen’s base salaries for 2011, 2012, and 2013 and $8,979,438, $11,619,850, and $14,280,612, respectively.

Allen will receive more than $38 million over the first three years of the deal. However, if he gets into any trouble before March 2009, the team can cut the cord, avoiding $15.5 million in guaranteed payments.

The total value? $73,260,069.

dude had 15 1/2 sacks last year. with KC's horrendous DL he was double teamed every play and still put up those numbers. Put him next to the two best DT's in the game and watch out. great move for the vikings. should be the favorites for the division now

lol...a 1st and two 3rds is a deal quite being so stingy...some of ya should be coaches...more then likely them 3 players together in a couple years would be half the player allen is today...sometimes u get lucky and strike gold but not to often.

like sledneck said 15.5 sacks in 14 games..not to mention 65 tackles for 111 yards loss...3 forced fumbles and a buttload of qb hurries that result in punts and interceptions...in 05 he had 11 sacks with 7 forced fumbles....what a maniac.

like i said before i can finally forgive the vikes for trading moss now with this offseason they've created so far...we still have our 2nd pick to try and get a quality starter and still have alot of late picks for depth and maybe get lucky with a diamond in the rough....i'm hearing about a back up qb out of tulsa named paul smith we might take in the later rounds...some people compare him to romo whatever thats worth.

big props to zigy and childress this offseason...i hope we get our new stadium in the future!!

This has been a good off-season, I am still leary of our QB situation but otherwise I think we've shored up a lot of our glaring needs. They are building a team here thankfully!!!

Lets hope T-Jack really makes leaps and bounds progress this year because if he does, we will be a contender!

i agree with the props to zygi!! can you imagine what the other minnesota sports (Twins, Timberwolves) would be like if they had owners like the wilf family?? they are a first class type of people who are willing to fork out some cash to improve a team, unlike Mr. Taylor and Mr. Pohlad who have the resources!!

Let's go Vikes! How long til Jared Allen and Aaron Rodgers meet??

james my man...now your talkin.

the best part of all that alot of people take for granted is his age...he's a young stud with a bright future...i don't even think any of us has seen the best of allen yet.

when a few of our older veterens retire we'll still have allen around as a cornerstone....our defense isn't gonna take quite the hit it would without him when we lose a few of these older guys shortly.

not many DE's in the league can get after the qb and stop the run like allen can,if any....normally the maniac sack guys aren't that good against the run or tackling...some say freeney is the best in the game but it's either sack the qb or nothing...his tackle totals are weak....also alot of them need breaks and have to come out of the game for certain plays...allen is an every down guy.

we got 1 of the best in the game without a doubt.

it's exciting to think what he can do on our line...in KC he put up them #'s when he was the only guy the opposing team's o-line,TE, and fullback had to worry about...different story around these parts...he's gonna make our whole defense better...i like his quote where he said "the only problem their gonna have is who's gonna sack the qb first."

if we had made no deal,,, all the good D-linemen were gone anyway at 17. I'll take the sack-champ over any pick we could have got at 17, especially since that after harvey was gone--- it went really down. Dorsey (what KC) got is a stud,, but no Allen, yet.

I wish we had gotten a WR in round 2,, but Sharper is getting old, and maybe we will pick up a WR in the rest of the draft.

The draft is week in WR and none were taken in the 1st round.

Jacksonville gave more picks to Derrick Harvey then we did for Jared Allen...

If this man stays out of trouble and our young secondary improves with T-Jack we win many games and my sundays are glorious!!!

lol ya think?

even if he takes the doubles and opens things up for the williams he'll have huge impact...if he has the same or more success then he had with KC our line will be off the chain.

who did he line up next to in KC? [PoorWordUsage], mc[PoorWordUsage], and [PoorWordUsage]?

the guy is a machine...lets hope he stays healthy...injuries can rain on a parade quick like.
