i am a 10th grader that has decided to play football next year(never have before). i am 5'10'' and 145 lbs and i want to get up to at least 155. i will be a junior in high school next year and will be playing jv, what i want to know is if anyone has protein supplements they would suggest, or recommend staying away from. i also know of people that take creatine and would like some opinions on that. i know that the supplements and/or creatine will not help me unless i lift, which i have started, even though i currently have a broken leg and finger. once i get healed i am really going to hit the weight room. i just am asking if people have suggestions or that kinda thing...........no i am not going to go out and take steroids, i hate it when people cheat and i am not going to become one, so please dont go there.

thank you,

Ryan

I would suggest a diet of whey protein for now and when you start to bulk up a bit then add creatine. Don't forget to supplement with vitamins as well.

All creatine does really is helps you to retain water. There are a few types of protein out there and I think that whey is the best. It promotes muscle development and allows faster recouperation time between lifts, as the protein helps fill in the void areas caused by your musles ripping and regenerating itself from working out.

I took creatine for a while when i was in high school, I think it was only for a summer though and all it did for me was make me fat. There was probably some more muscle growth too but not enough to justify the belly.

I would not recommend taking any supplements. I just finished college football and I know that you arent going to be tested by the NCAA but none of those supplements are regulated by the FDA and that means that they can put whatever they want on the label and it does not mean that that is what is in the package. I had a good friend who got his senior year of football taken away because he tested positive for a NCAA regulated substance and the only supplements he was taking did not show it on the label. He had to learn the hard way.

It was already said earlier but talk to a strength and conditioning coach. I guarantee you that he wont recommend taking any supplements and he would probably be more than happy to set up a proper diet and meal plan for you as well as a lifting schedule.

Its a tough subject and everyone thinks about doing it at some point in their lives cause there is always somebody bigger and faster than you, but what i have always lived by and what you have probably heard many times before is that "there is no substitute for hard work."

stay away from it all. All i took was liquid creatine, and thats enough. Everything else can make you out of control. I was part of a school that was 14-0 and won a high school title in football, you dont need it to be good.

Just eat food!

It's been 10 years since I've taken any creatine, whey protein, andro-19, or anything else, but I think they've all stayed relatively the same. If you are trying to gain weight, just eat, eat a lot!

Many body builders have a tough time consuming enough protein, creatine, and other goodies because they are only eating foods that will keep them slim. Body builders are worried about looking ripped, not necessarily being the strongest. It is really easy to ingest a lot of protein, and little fat with a protein shake(whey protein). It is tricky to ingest a lot of protein, and little fat with normal food.

Maybe give creatine/supplements another look in a couple of years. IMO they are not for anybody who is just starting lifting.

haha no im staying away from hgh and 'roids...10,000 casts yea i actually am prob going to be a DB and the more i think about it i think it might be best for me to just put on 5 lbs or so(so im 150) and work on my vert and quickness. i am also a basketball player so that might be the best combination for both sports(actually i havent played high school basketball for the school, i am already good enough i just kinda stopped, but im playin next year grin.gif)

I'd just get on a program designed for speed and quickness. No supplements, work your tail off and see where you are in 6 mo. to a year. Creatine can be something to get you over a plateau, I don't really think it's neccesary in high school. The whey protein powders are good, as stated before w/ cell rebuilding.

You are in high school, assume living w/ parents who cook for you, eat it up as much as you can, before you have to pay for it yourself. You'll get the most important nutrients that way, maybe add a simple multivitamin. A lot of supplements just pass right through b/c the body can only take in a certain amount at a time.

good luck
