Neighbor_guy
Check out McDowells wrech in qualifying today. (posted at varios sights) One of the biggest I have seen in the new car. All I can say is WOW!!!
harvey lee
I could not believe he walked away. When his car headed for the wall, I thought that this was going to be bad. Then he rolled I dont know how many times and walks away. Between the barrier walls and the new safer COT car, these drivers can really take a lick and still walk away.Way to go NASCAR. LMITOUT
I was just watching that too. Wow. This qualifies for that "bad wreck" thread that was going a while back. It has to rank up there as one of the ugliest ones. He walked away though, so the cars are doing their jobs well.
L_Cappo
thats gotta be the biggest crash i seen in long time.
metrojoe
I just happen to be channel surfing and caught the double 0's crash. That car just snapped around an went right into the wall. He is one lucky sob.
LMITOUT
I did a slow-mo when he hit the wall and the SAFER barrier compressed so much that it made contact with the concrete wall behind it. In case someone isn't aware, that SAFER barrier is steel and there is about a 30" gap between it and the permanent wall behind it and it flexed that much. It's remarkable how that wall functioned. xedge2002
That is unreal, definetly the worst wreck I have ever saw on nascar! I think that helps to show that the COT, no matter how much some may not like it, really does help protect the driver along with the safer barrier. Wonder how he would have turned out in the old style car? He is very lucky!
lawdog
ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE. I saw it after I knew he OK and they were just starting up again so I knew he was OK and I still thought there was no way you walk from that when I saw it. Good for him he is young, he will bounce back from that a lot quicker than a Kyle Petty would! OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!
LMITOUT
Qualifying is being replayed right now on SPEED if anyone hasn't seen the crash yet.
Johnsonator
WOW WOW WOW!!! If that same wreck would have happened without the Safer walls and the COT, I think NASCAR would have had another fatality.
ricbak
"HOLY" is right, This was a nasty crash and it was good to see McDowells walk away!
Eric Wettschreck
I just saw it on Sportscenter. Holy WOW!!!He needs to find the guys who build the safer barier, and his roll cage, and pay off their mortgage. If this was back in the day we'd be talking about a seriously injured or dead driver. Awesome to see the safety changes over the years actually working.
jwhjr
Incredible, good to see he walked away.
lawdog
nobody seems to be talking about it, but I'm sure something broke or a tire let go or something on that car. Watch right before he goes into the corner and there is a flume of smoke coming out from under the right side of it. Safe Barrier, HANS device and COT in my opinion combined to definitely saved this kid's life yesterday.

harvey lee
It may have been the track dry you saw Jeff as they had just placed some down and said he was running a little high. I dont know but that is what they were considering.
LMITOUT
Yeah, they said it was slippery in that corner prior to him going out and there was oil dry put down.
lawdog
I guess that could be it the track drying stuff but boy the way that thing made a 90 degree turn it sure seemed like more than just a guy losing it, guess it could have been though. Its still just amazing to me that hit and he walked away. Said he wasn't even very sore this morning at practice, just some left ankle tenderness... harvey lee
I agree it was a nasty crash. When one watches, he was loose and then it looked like something have to had broke with the hard right the car took. But, at those speeds of over 150mph, I guess anything can happen. I thought maybe a right front tire or something in the front end.

HOF#13
That was absolutely amazing. Hats off to NASCAR on the safer barrier's and all of the other safety mandates they have been implementing. They definately saved Mr. McDowell's life.
