traveler
just a pet peeve...someone posts a pic of a nice fish and suddenly it's a "slob" or even the newer "toad"! My rule of thumb; if it isn't something you'd call your (or my) wife/girlfriend, please don't call my fish a toad/slob/pig, etc...!

traveler
TJ, sure, they're describing the fish, and yes, it's meant as a compliment. But is it? Call your wife a toad and see!!
Deitz Dittrich
But I like to catch fat fish... I would prefer that my wife wasn't fat... and she isn't.. .so, I don't see how the two fit? I like my fish to be Hogs, Toads, Fatties!!! I would never dream of calling my wife that! Can you say Fry Pan to the head?
Team Otter
Interesting. Based off of this, then, what words qualify for fish-naming?
traveler
I don't know...open to suggestions?? I just don't remember calling fish pigs and slobs when i was a kid. Lets see..."boy, thats a beauty!" or "nice fish". maybe whopper (close, I know) Gotta be some more. Pig just never did it for me:( BTW, I like my fish big, but usually not fat. I've seen 28 inch walleyes pushing 10 lbs. and 30 inch + fish weighing the same and the latter are better looking fish to me. Where the heck did "toad" come from??? They aren't fat, big, or pretty! Eric Wettschreck
Ok traveller, I'll never call your fish, girlfriend, or wife a toad, fattie, pig, slob, or monster. Now that I know it upsets you I won't say it to you.Would you call your girlfriend/wife "Nice fish?"I've called my dog some names in it's life that would never call my wife, but then again, I'm not married to my dog. Northlander
Traveler dont worry man. I know Cheffrey loves to call his fish nice names too. I call my big fish dirty names like SLOB, PIG, BUTTERBALL, PORKER, SLAB, BULL, BUCKETMOUTH, WHALE etc. You can call them that and other names too. I wont be offended. Its been a while since I caught a BIG FATTY so Im headed on a mission to do so Mon and Tues on Vermillion. Come opener Ill be on the river looking for a true slob walleye and some Slab Crappies before that.
rockman
I remember staff from In-Fisherman, on an older video, calling a big fish a 'kinLED model'. Is that acceptable? I actually found it a rather amusing way of describing a fish.
Iambjm
I had a northern pike roll up my arm while I was trying to get the crankbait out of him, needless to say he buried it in my arm. I hate to tell you what I called that fish. Since when do we have to be politically correct with nicknames for fish. By the way my husband became physically ill when he saw it hanging from my forearm, I had to have two nice fishermen in another boat get it out for me, so I could go back to catching some "hogs". traveler
No need to bring politics into it:) It ain't any new age PC, it's just when i catch a great fish the first thing that comes to my mind isn't toad or pig! sheesh...didn't think it would be a big deal. Forget I brought it up....
fishgutz77
I always was partial to "creature", sometimes an occasional"sow bellied pump stationed boar biscut" orjust plain Hemongoloid, is that a word?all very affectionate terms of endearment. like "Beefer"words like "pixie" and Princess just don't describe what has transpired between a fisherman and a scale covered female with prehistoric dimensions after a lengthy battle of will, skill and tackle.I must admit though, I will be on a new mission to think of some more names to describe the beasties, lard bellies, turbotummies, doughballs of the deep, wide glides and sumozilla's that make their way to the boat. traveler
now the reverse of any argument often isn't true...remember, I didn't suggest you refer to your fish with the same affectionate terms you'd use on your love interest. I suggested not to call a great fish something your girl would find insulting. I just got done watching tonights episode of In-fisherman on TV, not a pig, toad or slob to be heard. Nice fish, beauty, big fish, etc...this from arguably the best fishing show on TV, not? I know, Al found Jesus (not that theres anything wrong with that) but he still puts out a good show, so if he can do it...

polarsusd81
Here is one straight from my late grandfather, Joker. Every thing was a Joker to him, from lil gills all the way up to huge bass and catfish. Every deer he shot was a Joker, squirrel, rabbit, ducks, geese, all Jokers. Now this is coming from an old southern boy, but maybe all my fish will be Jokers from now on.
