NCAA Tournament Scores and Upsets

Clemson choked away their huge lead and lost. Tough opening weekend. I see a lot of the FM crowd went with UNC to win it all. I would like to see Kansas win it all since they haven't done it in 20 years. UCLA wouldn't be bad either.

Things will shake out pretty quick.

24 wins. Lost Clemson to the elite 8 (doh) and Drake to sweet 16 otherwise still have points available in all the other matchups. Notre Dame and Purdue wins today will give me a boost back into contention.

West Virginia punches the first ticket to the Sweet Sixteen by sticking the Huggin's D to Duke. Not really impressed with Coach K and Duke's efforts vs. Belmont and WVU....Not enough athletes and nothing inside...Bench looks weak too. He might need a good recruiting year or two. The measuring stick of the ACC may have reverted back to UNC.

huh? They have a very athletic bench and good players coming off the bench as well. They are weak at big man though and that's their shortfall. They couldn't buy a basket today and that's what got them. Put 30% of those attempted 3's on the board and it would have been a blowout, but they didn't and they're going home as they should be with an effort like that. DeMarcus Nelson was pitiful in these two games and that didn't help either. He averages 15pts/game and he was in the single digits for both games combined. He's the only senior so they'll come back and reload for next year with a good team once again. I just hope they recruit some bigger guys to use in the paint. Quick and fast is one thing if you're scoring, but if your not then they're a sitting duck as this game illustrated.

If it means anything, ESPN said that they had over 3 million brackets registered this year. As of FRIDAY afternoon, there were only 24 brackets that were still perfect. Its been that kind of tournament.

That was 3.65 million, and nobody was perfect. Their are 4 people tied with 33/35. I'm in 1,599,578 th place.

It looked like UCLA was going to be the first #1 seed to leave the tourney early but pulled it out. That would have been a bracket buster for sure. I bet it hurt some people with Pitt losing as well.

If you haven't seen this stat already but your odds of picking a perfect bracket?

9,223,372,036,854,775,808 to 1.

That’s nine quintillion to one!

Yes, you do "Floyd". \:D

Not this year anymore of course. \:\/

Duke was a big hit to my bracket, probably to most people's brackets really, so hopefully it's a wash.

UCLA almost killed me! I've got them winning the whole thing! It aint lookin' pretty though, squeeking it out by 4. crazy.gif

Sounds like we agree on DeMarcus Nelson and the lack of the big man. Nelson wasn't getting anything other than on the drive. Paulus made his first two 3 pointers and then it was "license to thrill" and he made 1 of his next 7 shots from the 24 25 foot range with hands in his face. That was strange about this year's tournament. Tons of guys jacking 25 foot threes. You can make them and be the hero like Western Kentucky's kid or you can play the real odds and miss them like Paulus and numerous others did. It's cliche but come tourney time you live and die by the 3. Duke had some bad luck with big men. McRoberts left to be Oden's buddy and keep the bench warm in Portland. Coach K lost out on Patrick Patterson. Duke would be a Sweet 16 and Elite 8 lock with Patterson, Kentucky's stud big man, or McRoberts.

Where we disagree is the bench and athleticism. This year's team lacks athleticism but makes up for it with intense perimeter defense and outside shooting. There are plenty of teams with better athletes on display in the tournament. If they were more athletic they would have some slashers that could get it done getting to the iron. Just look at that bench, for some reason Coach K has loaded up on white G/Fs. Pretty atypical in division 1 basketball. Scheyer is strong off the bench but then it drops pretty quick. Heavy minutes for 6 guys and no scoring punch from the reserves.

After the 2001 national championship and with Carolina's struggles, it was clear Duke was the measuring stick of the ACC, but you could nearly make the argument that slow and in subtle ways UNC is the high standard of ACC hoops near the end of the decade. One good recruiting class could change all that, but for the past two years Coach K's commercials have ran longer into the tournament than his teams.

Nice run for Davidson. If I'm an NBA GM I wouldn't touch Roy Hibbert with a ten foot pole. I fully expected that game to be a Georgetown blowout and Hibbert fouled out with 6 points with some skinny 6-7 dude guarding him.

Villanova and Western Kentucky make a strong showing for the 12 seed.

Should be a great round of 16. It's still anyone's tournament but there are a few teams playing really well that look like they will be hard to beat. We'll see how those games go and by this time next week the Final 4 will be set!
