Does anyone know of a lighter that works when it`s zero outside or colder. When I was in Devils Lake last year my butane lighter would`nt work unless I put it in my coat and warmed it up. I found out the hard way and it was 20 below out. Fish On

I smoke cigars, so I always carry a lighter in my truck. During the winter, I make a point to carry it in my pocket because they don't work well in cold. One way to warm them up quickly in the cold is to rub them between your hands and shake them vigorously. Usually works for me.

The only thing i know of besides keeping the butane lighter in an inside pocket is to use a Zippo, those things will still light in a 40 mph wind. @ bad things about a Zippo tho are : 1) i hate the taste of it when lighting a smoke 2) you get a hell of a burn from the fluid if it gets turned upside down in your pants pocket

One of my bubby that I fish with got a butane light and he had the same problem as you mentions he had to keep it close to his body so it would light. I just always used a zippo works everytime.

I've had good luck with the survival butane lighters for $15 to $50. Kind of pricy, but when you HAVE to have a light, you HAVE to. Mine, which was the $15 one, lit at -30 degrees, and the don't blow out.

The two places I've found them are not sponsors on this site, so I won't talk them up. But you can figure out where.

mph winds,its worth the investment

If your game to blow $40 on a lighter, then a Brunton LED Lighter is a Kewl one for the ice ranger.

Flick a super-hot flame in an 80-mph wind or twist on the light to find your keys or charge a glow jig. Windproof lighter and a bright LED flashlight....KEWL!

Refill with butane and the LED Flashlight runs for up to 20 hours on the included battery. 2-¾" x 1-¼" Weight 3 oz.

I carry the trusty Zippo lighter. The lighter fluid won't burn your front pants pocket if you don't over fill it. For those of you that are wondering...if the fluid leaks out slightly, then it has a tendency to attack your skin and is not very comfortable up in the front pocket smile.gif

I have had the best luck with any good torch type lighter. I smoke cigars and you can light them in just about any wind or temp conditions. They are generally a little more pricey, but refillable, so they last a long time. Good luck!
