Santana negotiations; Mets backup plan

It appears the Mets' negotiations with the agents for Johan Santana won't be over quickly.

Sources familiar with those discussions said Thursday that while the talks may not go right to Friday's 5 p.m. ET deadline, the two sides were still far enough apart that it was unlikely any deal could be reached before Friday morning at the earliest.

The sources also left open the possibility that the talks could collapse without an agreement, though the odds of that appear remote.

Santana's agents, Peter and Ed Greenberg, are believed to be looking for a six-year extension in the range of $150 million -- a figure that would include an upfront payment that would boost Santana's 2008 salary ($13.25 million) to beyond $20 million.

The Mets, not surprisingly, differ on the dollars. But the biggest obstacle appears to be the length of the deal.

Indications are that the Mets want to limit the guaranteed portion of the extension to five years, not including Santana's current contract, which expires after 2008. So if Santana's side is adamant that the deal extend beyond 2013, it's believed the Mets would insist that the back end of the contract not be guaranteed, but could include at least one vesting option year.

In the meantime, there are signs that the Mets continue to express interest in free-agent pitcher Kyle Lohse. Lohse was viewed, essentially, as the Mets' backup plan in case they weren't able to trade for Santana. But when one baseball man who had spoken with Mets GM Omar Minaya was asked if the club could end up with both Santana and Lohse, the reply was: "Absolutely."

Boy, I wouldn't mind the Mets playing hardball, watching it fall through, then repackaging 57 to the Red Sox or Yankees so we can actually get a better deal. Should have taken those initial offers...the longer you wait, the more desperate you look.

If this deal doesnt go through, the Twins will get next to nothing for Santana next season as he will just be gone with the wind. The Twins will never pay even close to what is needed to keep him. All the other teams will turn it into a bidding war to the highest bidder.

We should have dealt him off right away when the other teams were interested with maybe some talent ta boot.

I don't think we would get the talent that is in the mets package(i know there are a lot of questions about it) in any other deal before spring training if the deal with the mets would happen to fall through. The twins would have to hope for rotation problems with the yankees, red sox, dodgers, or angels in spring training for one of those teams to give up more than the mets are giving up. The twins would also have to convince johan to waive the clause which i think migh be done. It migh not be during spring training, but when the twins are out of the race by the end of may i think he would rethink his situation and go to a team in the hunt for the playoffs even if he doesn't get an extension.

It would be nice if the Mets and Johan didnt agree on any terms, but I dont think the Mets will allow that! The Mets have the money, an extra year on his contract wont hurt the club in the long run. If they let Johan go the NY fans will be irrate!

sdstate hit it on the head IMO. What do you think the Yankees or Soxs will be willing to give the Twinkies July 1 for 57 when they are pursuing each other if the Mets deal falls through? Herschel Walker? I hope that the Mets hold tight. Major league baseball owners have become their own worst enemies.

Yeah good old mr. "I have a tummy ache so I can't pitch a big game in the playoffs"

That guy was a LOSER.

Oh yeah -- One million per win -- he will be LUCKY to have 8 wins this year and 14 losses and a 4.9 era an opponets average of .359.

So, should I tell you how I really feel?

"Johan Santana Extension Talks Continue

UPDATE, 2-1-08 at 1:32pm: Jon Heyman has an update as we near the deadline. The Mets are expected to give Santana a six-year extension worth $132MM ($22MM per) and also tack on a $7MM bonus to up his '08 salary. That would put Santana over $152MM for the 2008-14 seasons."

Found this at a MLB rumor site. Wish I could get paid that much for doing what I do for a living. Greed, but someone out there is dumb enough to pay it.

I dont believe romors from the media, they are to often wrong. We will be finding out soon enough!

So what if the Mets back down, do you think he will come crawling back to the Twins and ask for them to sign him with their highest offer? I doubt it! Or do you think Yankees, or Boston will step up and make another offer?

I personally think the Mets will cave and give him what he asks for!

    • got this tackled today took about 3 hours to get both sides done. Didnt even get to use a torch....   Thought I was golden with just jacking it up and I could get to everything but no luck. Had to remove the entire axle hub and brake assembly to get to what I needed. Was a pain but still better then taking off the entire pivot arm.    Axle bearings were already greased and in great shape thankfully. Got both leaf springs installed and its ready for the road again.   Probably going to have my electric brakes checked, I am not touching anything with the brake drums. Based on what I saw it doesn't look like my electric brakes have been working anyway. Brakes are nice to have if its slippery out
    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
