Chubby Darter??

Just added one to the arsenal today, I was wondering if most people tip them with some sort of bait or just jig them as is. I have been using Jigging shad raps and Jigging Rap's as well as a host of other jigs and normally tip them all with a minnow head or 1/2 a minnow. I have also seen guys be effective with just the jig, (the darter that is) no meat. Just wanted to know some of your preferences. Thanks

Can't wait to get it and give it a shot.

The Chubby Darters are apparently designed for ice fishing, but has anyone ever used on in open water? Do they have any action on the retrieve or are they strictly a vertical lure?

never caught anything more than my rodbag and my hand a few times with mine.. very disappointed.. i try it on just about every trip but just havent had any luck.. i can always catch fish on the Sweedish pimple and other spoons as well as jiggin raps but still nothin on the chubby "ripoff"

Maybe next time.

Just My 2 Cents

I would hardly call it a ripoff, I know quite a few people that use them sucessfully. Just like any other lure, they take time to get used to and they have to be used in the right setting, I have my favorite jigs in the box, but sometimes they don't work either.

They are an over rated lure. Sure they can catch fish but they are no where near my go to lure. I would much rather run a JB varmit, Rattlen Varmit Or Scenic Tackle Angel Eye Jr. or Glow Devil. Those put way more fish on the ice for me. On days the darter work so is everything else. They aren't the miracle lure we have been lead to believe and at $6 a crack. I know I wished I hadn't fallen into the hype now I have probably $250 worth of darters that have yet to hit the lake this year.

When I used them I alway tip them I have never had luck without some bait on them.

At first I didn't like them. Now I use them all the time. I was using too much jigging action like I had a spoon on. I just use quick twitches of the rod and have had great success for all species. Last sunday I had a deadstick and a No. 3 chubby darter and caught nothing on the deadstick. The darter caught me 2 walleyes, a northern, a good sized sunny, and a perch. I also missed many others ;). Never tip it with anything, it restricts the wobble on the way down.

Personally I tip the #3s with waxies and the the bigger #6? (I think) with a minnow head. I am very impressed with the Gander Mntn exclusive blue dace color someone mentioned on here about a month ago. The blue stands out very good, even in murky water

I've caught fish with them. I haven't got one with my new #3 size yet, but I've only given it a few minutes.

When Ive put meat on it is ruins the action. It's strength appears to be it's downward wiggle motion. Any meat and it's ruined.

I use the chubby darters alot. They really attract the panfish. Here`s a video when i was using a #5 darter.Tie a piece of vanish on the bottom eyelet with a rat finkie & maggot 8 inches below the darter and watch the panfish bite then.In this video it was just a #5 darter as i was fishing for eyes. sisseton lake Also notice where the crappies come from and where they go back to.I have 12 weedez on the left hand side. You can see one of the weedez in the video.

i would deffinatly not say that my little chubby grin.gif is not a waste of money, the real hard part about them is starting. its hard to choke down 5-8 bucks a peice depending on where you get them, especially in sizes and colors. but if you have some to choose from, not just basing your opinion off of a selection of a #3 silver darter. I mean there are times and places for each kind of darter and it sometimes dont work, but when it does work and the fish are active--Boy the action is hot.

Like the video above the real action is not on the jig, but on the fall. and it doesent swoop like the rapala does, but instead it does a shake and jiggle on the way down, flashing its sides as it falls, just as a fish would look like if it was falling and struggling.

Just remember that if you are going to try them, bite the bullet or go in with a friend and buy a few in different sizes and colors.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
