structure on a string

Besides my Thorne Bros sweetheart rod, it was the best purchase for me this year. They have held schools of crappie/sunfish/perch under me longer than they might have stuck around otherwise. I am convinced I caught more fish with it.

I tried them several times over the last week and have not gotten a bite until I pulled them up. As soon as they were out of the water I started catching fish. This is not the first time it has happened. Most days I don't notice any difference either way.

I use them quite often, especially when I go with my kid because then we tend to set up shop in one spot and not move around very much. I've had days when it seems like they haven't made a difference, and days when it seems like they help a lot. I use them every time I'm planning to leave my portable in 1 spot for a while.

We use them for tip up fishing and they definitely work smile.gif

They work just fine until the northern takes off and gets tangled in the SOS!!!! We had a ton of problems with northerns getting tangled in the weeds as we were pulling them in...I can see a bigger fish actually getting off because on some of the snot rockets we caught...we had a heck of a time getting them up the hole and untangled.

I do think they work though....next time we use them....we are going to just use one SOS per tip up and see if that helps.

are these legal i thought it was illegal to make artificial structure for the purpose of attracting and catching fish??

That only applies to structure that sinks and are permanent. These are only temporary.

Please read about my experiece at Lake Josephine - http://www.fishingminnesota.com/forum/sh...e=0#Post1235052

I know that as outdoors people we tend to want to make stuff ourselves - it can be very rewarding to make your own rod, jigs, shelters, etc. I just thought maybe I could share my thoughts and experiences with making your own artificial structure. Plastic plants that you can buy at your local discount stores where never designed, in any way, to be exposed to the harsh conditions of being outside in freezing temperatures and dropped into a lake. I know this, because I've tried it all myself. These decorative plants and Christmas tinsel do not last. They eventually fall apart. Reel Weeds, on the other hand, were specifically made for these conditions. Even aquarium plants, which are not cheap, become brittle in cold conditions and break like potato chips. I'm sure everyone will agree that if the DNR starts finding plastic leaves and tinsel on the ice or washed up on shore, temporary artificial structure will become illegal very quickly. According to the LaDredge HSOforum, even the SD Game, Fish and Parks, working with LaDredge, is using their Reel Weeds for perch reproduction - that is awesome and something I take pride in supporting. I know that Structure on a String may seem expensive to some, but if you take into acount that they are going to last many years, the cost per season is very minimal - certainly less than having to make new ones of your own including all the time that is put into it. I certainly didn't intend to insult anyone trying to make their own, I'm a DIYer myself, and have made my own structure, but in this case I just don't think it is worth it.

I have examined SOS closely in the Big Box stores and cannot help but notice that the structure and materials making up SOS appear to be of the same caliber as those found in better branded 'plastic' aquarium plants, many of which ARE available in taller sizes. I have chosen to make my own out of these at a substantial savings. Reel Weeds and SOS, to me, are one of the biggest gouges in the ice fishing market, next to Chubby Darters. Todd-brand SOS also appear to be holding up quiet well in the brutal elements. Potato chips are not allowed in my porty. As for performance benefits, there does seem to be a marginal positive correlation between DIY-SOS and 'lingering fishes,' particularly after I have had a few Irish stouts.

I'm going to pop my posting cherry on this subject-

My buddy works at Gander Mountain and I asked him about SOS and he said to just DYI. I went to Micheals and bought the vines and tied them to my tip up line and weighed the line down with 1 ounce sinkers. I made 4 lines like this and put them in the 4 corners around my portable while I fished in the middle. I KNOW it made a difference.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
