Wusthof (or other high end) Fillet Knives

Chode2235

Question

My dad recently lost his old trusty fillet knife, and with his B-day coming up I was looking at replacing it for him. I was looking at the Wusthof fillet knives, as I have heard outstanding things about their regular kitchen knives.

Anyone else have any experience with these knives and can make a recommendation.

The Leech knives are very, very nice. I am also partial to Dunn knives, but they are big $$$. I have a friend that has a set of Wusthoff's in the kitchen, and they are also excellent.

My wife got me an inexpensive Rapala electric fillet knife. Wow! My old fillet knives are going to be very lonely now.

I've got a Wusthof fillet knife and it's a great knife. I always wanted a higher end fillet knife, but price was always an issue. I bought it because I got it for an extremely low price(70% off). The only draw back is it's a 9" blade and it's too much knife for a majority of the fish I catch around home here. I do get a lot of use out of it when I go down to Florida.

American Angler makes a decent Electric knife. I've burned out one (over 5 years) and getting close on the second one. the blades that come with it are too big (specially for sunfish) but they make smaller blades that work great. If your dad cleans a lot of fish, he'll be glad to have an electric.

I have a Leech Lake Knife and have bought 3 for my fishing buddies. They usually put "Made especially for" and then the name of the person you are giving it to but I've had them put short phrases on it instead like "For all of the good times" or "For all the fish to come". They are an awesome knife. I usually get mine sharpend one each year at the Sportshow but my friends have gone 2 or 3 years without getting it sharpened and they stay sharp.

Do you think they would engrave "Hot Grease Release!" on there for you? I am thinking I would like to get one of those Leech Lake Knives. My room mate had a set of Wustof knives, (no fillet knife though) and they were amazing. I loved using those things. My knives aren't too bad, but comparing them to the Wustofs is not even an option.

For non electric it is a leech lake for me that thing is amazing. I love it. Then for electric you can not beat the rapala. Those are what I used and I have been using both now for about 5 years. My rapala is starting to get tired. The trigger sticks and doesn't always shut off when I want it to but I probably filet a few more fish per year than the average guy too grin.gif.
