Mice had a party in my Voyager (Help!!!)

Well it was bound to happen, last year the little S.O.B's ate the bejesus out of my boat cover. mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

This year it was my Fish Trap Voyager. mad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

It has stunk my whole garage up now that it is in side & erected. How have you fine folks fixed / dealt with holes and order when this happens?

There is mouse fesse everywhere like someone smeared a caramel paste all over the place.

The fist thing I figured I would do is bring it down to the local carwash and pressure wash it the best I can then bring it home and set it up in the garage to dry it out.

This may take care of the odor but does not fix the 10-12 holes in it??

What do you think a new canvas cover would cost??

Do you think I could upgrade to a newer series of canvas cover??

Any help / advice would be appreciated

Thanks

S.D.

If you can remove the smell and that may be very tough to do, you can get some patch kits the same color as your house cober from the company. i would guess it will take 2-3 kits to repair the holes depending on the size.

I think the real issue will be removing the odor. The kits do a fine job of patching. I would guess a new cover will run approx $150.00

Replacement Tent For the Fish Trap Voyager w/ Trap Link & w/ D Door $199.95

I'm sorry to hear your mishap. You are prolly better off just replacing it if you can swing the cash, or have an upholstery place patch it. Most places can match the tent. Did you have a cover on it?? If not, get one and toss some moth balls inside during storage. I didn't have any problems storing in my garage last year, but they instead went for my bow case and chewed through my bow string. frown.gif

Tightlines,

I think I would just replace the tent on it and be done with the smell and holes. If you go to the Clam HSOforum under closeouts they have replacement tents for $75. For that price it would be worth it not to have to deal with patching holes and worrying about the smell.

I would guess some bleach and water would take care of the tub. Good luck. I had mice get into one of my previous houses and never did get the smell completely out.

I just repatched one last fall got it from neighbor, a few patches already but it sat for a few years and mice REALLY got it! I took an old tent cut patches used rubber cement to glue them on, and to be safe I used carpet thread and did a primitive stich job on each took a day & half dont look pretty but it works! I could'nt see the money for a new one,I dont Icefish as much as openwater.

check the clam HSOforum, they had a close out on some canvas, voyager included. it might not have had the trap link though, I think I remember seeing a canvas for $50. otherwise just call them, they'll send you a patch kit.

Earlier this fall I patched a bunch of holes in my old Fishtrap III, that were caused by mice .Clam does not carry the canvas for these first generation houses anymore, so I had no other choice but to repair it.I used canvas from another old one man fishtrap I had parted out, and tear mender. The tear mender did a decent job of patching things up, but it is a bit messy to use.I picked up a bottle of the tear mender at a local Tractor Supply store.

...and if you do repair it, take your time and do a good job. Use similar or exact fabric for patches. Use good contact cement like Pliobond, and patch both the inside and outside. You can be careful and wind up with a very good looking repair.

Use concentrated baking soda and/or scented detergent for the mouse smell. Apply the products and let sit for 4 or 5 days. Be meticulous about cleaning every inch of your rig. Hang an HS Pine Wafer in it if you like the pine scent.

Huntnfish is right on.You can get a replacement tent under closeouts on the Clam HSOforum. It doesn't have the trap-link though. That'll run you a couple hundred.I just ordered the replacement for my Yukon last week. It was $88 including shipping and taxes. Cut the crappy parts out of the old canvas and save the good stuff for future patching. Good Luck and Merry Christmas.

CanvasCraft sells a glue called VLP vinyl leather plastic that I used to patch mine if you can get some material. I also had a problem with mice and the only thing that made any difference is some stuff called Odoban that is sold by Sams club. We went to the pet store and bought 2 different products that were guaranteed and nether one helped.

Same thing happened to my Otter this year. 15 holes. Mice dump all over. Took to laundery mat. Washed it. Ordered repair kit from Otter $9. Included TearMend which you can get at local hardware store. Cut circles of fabric and glued them on front and back. Worked like a charm and looks just fine. Good fishing.

I am not sure if the fish traps are the same(removable fabric), but when I store my Clam 1060 I take the fabric off and store the suitcase in the shed and fold up the fabric and put it into a Rubbermaid tote and put it in the basement. I never have a problem with mice. Just unfold the suitcase in the fall and pressure wash the floor and let dry and put the fabric back on.

I have a Yukon, after initial assembly with the strip on the back of the tub, I seen that there was a need to make the tent removable. I went to the sewing shop and bought 2 packages of heavy duty snaps. Now it takes about 15 minutes to take off the tent for summer storage. Tub stores in the garage rafters and the tent in the spare room of the house. No mousies!!! Good luck getting that smell out. Mice built a nest under the hood of my pontoon O.B. 2 years ago, I used engine degreaser and carwash it it still stinks!!! Phred52

    • Sorry to hear that Duff. Will give my GSP's an extra scratch behind the ear for you guys today
    • Aw, man, sorry to hear that.  Shed some tears and remember her well.  They all take a piece of our hearts with them; some more than others.
    • yes sorry for your loss..  our dogs are always special...
    • Truly sorry to hear that duffman! I know that feeling.  Keep the good memories
    • Chamois passed away this weekend a couple days short of her 13th bday. What a great dog to hang out with here at home and on distant adventures. Gonna miss ya big time my little big girl.
    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
