Fish Trap Guide

I plan on heading out to the gander mountain this weekend to get the deal on the fish trap guide while it is still at the 299 price... What do those of you who own it think of it? I will also be getting the cover runner kit and the hitch for my snowmobile. I will be taking it on some fairly long treks down my "chain of lakes".. they really arent connected though just separated by roads and a few short trails. Do you think it will hold up well behind the snowmobile with the runner kit towbar and cover? thanks for the advice!

I saw that last weekend. Not a bad deal. One other suggestion is the new Team Wild houses. They're the replacement for the otter wilderness series. I saw the ad in fleet farm and the 2 man is on sale for the same price. It's a little bigger. I decided against the guide because of the height (5ft). The Team Wild ones are just over 6ft tall. Weight is roughly the same.

I think you can get hyfax and tow bars for either. The other difference is the Team Wild houses have a bench vs the two seats for the guide. Not sure if you have a preference.

I looked at both, but then found a used Otter Cabin I went with instead.

I have fished out of the guide for 2 years (starting the 3rd) I have no complaints. I cant say how the runners hold up on asphalt because mine has only seen the snow and ice ( a lot of it) and held up well. For one person fishing two holes this is a great house you will like it.

I picked up the Guide at GM about a week and a half ago, and fished out of it for the first time this past weekend and loved it. There wasn't a ton of snow and it was real easy to pull. Fished with a buddy, and had a flasher, lantern and heater, and had plenty of room (we're both average size). Seems well built, nice and solid, but not too heavy. We fished for about 5 hours, and you're right, those seats are comfortable. (It was one of the big selling points for me also)

I have no buyers remorse!!! Bought the cover and not the runners. Would do it if I was going to be pulling it, especially if you're going to hit pavement.

Good Luck!

My Favorite house, I logged over a 1,000 miles on mine in the 6 years I had it with no runners.

Best one man out there IMO easy to heat fairly light and you can squeeze a 2nd person in if need be.

I actually prefer the old style seat system which allowed me to have my gas auger in the tub.....never should have sold it.

Congrats!

I also agree, I have the guide and starting my 3rd year. Great one person, good 2 person. Not applicable to you necessarily, but am very happy I went light since I have no snowmobile to pull it and can get most places easily on early ice or heavy snow.

I think I'm a 5-year Guide owner. Like Pierbridge, I also have the old seating system. I've since added a comfy swivel seat, Reflectix, cheap hyfax runners and a LED lighting system. I love it. I just bought an Otter Den, and may actually go back to fishing solo out of my Guide. $299 is a good deal...it will be hard to beat that price until the season close out sales.

I'd snatch that thing up for $299. I bought one a few years ago used for something like $275. Mine also had the old style seats that are both attached to a bar that runs the length of the sled. It's nice because I can slide the bar back and get my auger and buckets in there.

My buddy just bought a new Guide with the new seats and said it looks like it will be pretty easy to set the auger on the seat bars. Plus the seats sound a lot more comfortable.

I fish alone out of mine about half the time, and with two about half the time. With two people, two flashers, a Mr. Heater (regular old style, not a Buddy) with a 20 lb tank, we don't have a TON of extra space, but it's certainly plenty of room to fish in.

Pulls fairly well until you get a lot of snow, then anything is hard to pull by hand. If I was looking for a shack and found a Guide for that price I wouldn't think twice.

I've had a guide for just over a year and really like it. I've never used it by myself but it works nicely for 2 people. Heck, I've even had a 3rd person in it sitting on a bucket. grin.gif

My only complaint it that it isn't tall enough to stand up in.

Thanks for all your advice guys! I just sold my small 2 man suitcase style clam junior for 100 bucks on hsolist. I just let my parents keep the money so they could get me the guide for Christmas! I cant wait i will be out in it next week for sure! the thing i really dont like about my fish trap scout is it is the older model therefore doesnt have the door in the front and i have also heard the trap link door is very nice just because you can put stuff out side that door and reach out easily to grab it... Thanks for all the advice FMers!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
