Anyone after Canadian Whitetails?

Recommended Posts

Sure have been seeing a ton of American traffic through Kenora this year for whitetail hunting. Believe it or not, most are from Vermont, NY, and Michigan.

Wondering if any FMers get up north of the border for big bucks? I have seen some monsters in the back of pickups! (Guides aren't required)

Hey there. I dont go up there for big bucks cuz any buck will do for me. I thought it was that if you owned land then you didnt need a guide but if you did not own land then a guide was required or did they change all that. When I used to live up there we had some dudes from Chicago go home with a couple wall hangers, a nice 12 and 13 pt, werent very wide but sure had some mass and these were taken on the same hunting trip. I like the longer rifle season up there and I dont think there is as much hunting pressure. Happy hunting and be safe!

The own land rule is not anymore. Not sure if it ever was, but if it was, they've done away with it. You can hunt as a non resident, any Crown land. And the guys from Vermont are on to it. Like I said, there have been literally hundreds of guys from VT (25-30 hour drive) in Kenora in the last few weeks. It all comes to an end on Thursday, as the non-resident season ends. But yes, still a long season.

Hey, guys, haven't looked here for a while but had to check back cause I was going through withdrawl from hunting!

Couple of thoughts:

*There still is a deer hunting guide requirement for the Fort Frances district, which includes all of one hunting mgmt area along the border and the on-mainland portion of the Lake of the woods area. If you hunt on the islands on LOTW, or north up by Kenora, you don't need a guide in the Kenora district. (I think any licensed Ontario resident can ge a guide permit for a few dollars so no big deal to get one.)

*Non resident deer license is $172 which, for me, is a chunk of change. I was thinking of buying oone during my 9-day trip but the ducks kept flying and the price was too much for a day or two of hunting. Also, there's a big game export fee which is hefty as I recall.

*Just about all drive-to destinations in the U.S. in Canada are seeing fewer drivers. A lot of guys and families on the edge are opting not to travel with $3 to $4 per gallon gas.

*$1 U.S. is now only worth 95 cents Canadian. That's a 50 cent drop in the value of my dollar in the past 5 years. Makes trips more expensive.

It all ads up.

If I was in the resort or tourism business, I'd be worried. I know a lot of guys come on here and say blah-blah-blah its worth it and balh-blah-blah gas and licenses are only part of a trip, and of course it is. But a lot of people just don't have the money to go that far. Or go as often. Maybe its one trip per year instead of 2 or 3...

I know that I have a free (hah!) place to stay up there and still have cut back on our familie's trips. I try to stay longer instead. We'll make 13 trips this year and average nearly 5 nights per trip. Used to make 16-18 trips.

That's all.

Take care. See you on the ice on Dec. 28 (if we ever get ice.)

P.S. Benelli dude, I'm heading out Thursday night for 3 days to kill some roosters! I'll spell out your name in dead, bloody birds, too!!!

We have been contemplating a whitetail hunt up there for some time...It was my understanding a guide was needed as well..I just looked at the regs and it looks like the Crow Lake area is in area 9A and a guide is not needed? It said the export fee for a deer is $35...Which doesn't sound steep to me...I would be interested in a wilderness camping style hunt on our own...It may be possible as I understand it..Any insight on the regs in the Crow Lake area Hemlock? I know Muskie Bay has a hunting package but with license, gas,and fees it would be in the $2500 range...Ouch...

In the past few weeks here, I've talked with a ton of hunters. Mostly from Vermont. I think, from what I saw alot of them were "budget" hunters. Staying in some of the less expensive hotels (I don't mean dumps, just bed, shower, fridge, kitchennette, etc,) and I gathered they were loving the experience, and didn't hear any complaints about the price. Not even over the price of fuel! grin.gif

As far as guides: From the 2007 Ontario Hunting Regulations book, page 52.

"Guides: Non-residents must be accompanied by one licensed guide for each two hunters when hunting deer in the Territorial District of Rainy River. WMUs within the Territorial District of Rainy River are 9B, 10, 11A and part of 7B and 12 B."

None of thes areas are remotely close to Kenora, Crow Lake, Sioux Narrows, Minaki, etc. You are free to roam without a guide. These areas mentioned above are almost all along the US/Canada border.

A hunt can easily be acheived for less than $2500.

I just talked with a friend of mine who has wanted too hunt Canada forever but thought that you couldnt hunt anywhere up there without a guide. I told him what i read here and he is really pumped up. He is going too look into a few things and we might look into a trip up in the Kenora/Sioux Narrows area in the next couple years.

The mnr are changing some of the reg's for next year in regards to the non-resident deer hunts here in Ontario.

Have to wait till the reg's are posted to see what the changes are.
