walleyemkr
I think I've gotta vote Green Lake, Kandiyohi Co. for the smallmouth record. The 10'ish years that it was nearly a closed bass fishery (minimum harvest of over 20") sure makes it a possibility now that it's back to statewide regs. I've lived on it for over 5 years now, many 5 pounders caught (and even a 6+ lb. largemouth this year). Gotta vote for Green, seemingly every smallie in there is a pig! river rat316
funny how when those "5" pounders have made it to scales in tourneys they turn into 4 pound fish
tfsh4bass
I have limited experience up your guys way but I have caught some very good largemouth 5.5 to 6.5 the last few years out of Minnewashta, O'Dowd, Steiger, Waconia, Prior, and Shields. I hooked and lost one at O'Dowd that was bigger than anything I have caught up there probably a little over 7. As far as smallmouth goes just from my experience Mille Lacs, Thunder, and Green seem to be pretty good bets and I am sure Vermillion has some hogs also but I have never fished it. Wayne Ek
I know that the DNR fisheries folks have handled and measured both a state record smallie and largemouth in the Alexandria and Fergus Falls area in the last two years. One came from a large popular body of water and the other from a small lake that sees little or not pressure.
Shack
I firmly feel the next state record smallie is coming out of Mille Lacs! I was lucky enough (found out after the fact) to see a true Mille Lacs monster smallie come out of the big pond! My buddy caught and released the fish and we had no clue on how big it really was! If it ain't dead or hanging on someones wall by now, it is still swiming in the big pond and would be well over state record size ny now! This pig was caught on a green spinner bait under a bouy! We were pre, pre fishing my first and only bass tourny on Pelican! We figured we would try some new things as we were staying on Mille Lacs. We were in the Gophers Engines tourny and took 13 out of 68 boats. It was a great weekend of bass fishing. I just do not get out and fish bass anymore! Also note my buddy who caught fish has big knuckles, so that gives and idea of the size of this fish! It was the only bass we caught on Mille Lacs that day! I will not get into measurements, because we have forgot them! I wish I knew what I know now! But! It was over 7lbs and was a monster! I feel if a smallie guy was to dedicate a season or two to only Mille Lacs and only smallie fishing, a record could be broken! My two cents on bass fishing! Hoffer
I could be wrong...but seems to me that Dean Capra caught a state record smallie on Mille Lacs already a couple years ago...it would have been the state record if kept - but he released it. I am pretty sure they weighed it and measured it and it would have "officially" broken the record...so my vote for state record smallie is Mille Lacs...as far as the state record largemouth I would vote for one of those smaller not so well known lakes - or of course O-dowd - it already has the state record largemouth - so why not again? Cabela10
I thought Auburn is the current record Largemouth. Before Auburn was it O'Dowd?
Hoffer
You know your right - the state record lists Auburn as the record lake in 2005. I could swear though that a year or so ago - someone caught a new state record from Odowd...and he kept it and they transported it in the livewell to try and save it for show in a large "aquarium" like the ones they have in Cabellas - apparently that is not lawful to do - and there was a big debate over this...maybe I am rememembering things incorrectly - but i thought that fish was the new state record?? Can someone set this straight? Also looking at the state record smallie - it came from W battle - right in my back yard growing up...never ever fished that lake for smallies - guess I should have!! Cabela10
You are talking about the most recent largemouth record. It was caught by Mark Raveling out of Auburn Lake and everything you stated was part of that fish in October of 2005.
AugieAngler
I have seen many many 6+ smallies caught on a secret lake in the BWCA . My guess is that one of these years our lake or possibly Sag will kick out a state record smallie - if Mille Lacs doesn't do it first. As for largies, there are some great small lakes in the metro that could do it (or 'Tonka). There are a couple northeast metro lakes in particular that come to mind. Wayne Ek
Hoffer, I think your're thinking of a bass caught on O'dowd 3 or 4 years ago by a individual who was shore fishing. They kept the fish, cleaned it... a friend or neighbor heard about it and got the carcass, from that the fish was estimated in the high 9 pound range. Superduty
I saw a photo of the o'dowd bass and I would agree that it was over 9lbs and maybe pushing 10. Too bad he cut it up before it could have been officially weighed. As far as the earlier thread regarding Green lake smallies...I find it hard to believe Green is carrying too many monster smallies also. I've seen a lot of tourney bags weighed on that lake, and rarely does anybody catch anything much over 4 lbs when the fish are actually put on a scale. The numbers of 3 to 4 lb smallies are astounding. I think Green has a better chance of producing a truly big largemouth than a smallie.

Cabela10
I was on O'Dowd today and got three little guys. Very windy and I can't see how a largie can get big on that lake. It's so shallow.
svttom01
The O'Dowd largemouth was caught about 10 years ago and yes, the gentlemen decided to fillet it and have it for a meal. My dad still has the paper clipping from the Star Tribune and I always look at it once a year to get me pumped. I fished O'Dowd heavily last year and the biggest I came up with was a 6lb 15oz bass caught on the 4th of July. I did see an 8+ pounder come out of the lake last summer as well and my guess is the next state record will come out of that lake. I am just upset I haven't caught it yet! serpent
My dad and I have a handful of lakes that we fish for the state record. Biggest this year is 7lbs 14oz. I think the lmb record will come out of a small lightly pressured lake and the smb will come out of the upper miss or mille lacs.
EBass
SM = Mille Lacs, not in the river, the environment is too volatile. LM = Any - we live around some of the best waters in the US. In a couple of years the LM record will be broke again. My .

Wayne Ek
KT, not sure which lake you are talking about. I know of two right by you that have produced numerous 5's and a couple of 6's for us the past two years.
Coach Dog
I know the lake as well. I've caught a few 5's out of it and have seen a couple 7's. I know of that DNR story as well.
