Got rid of my soft sided waterbed and purchased a select comfort frown.gif Big mistake on my part. I have a poor back and I sure miss that waterbed. I hear good things about the tempurpedic. I think thats the name, it has the material that the astranauts sleep on. gl

We have had a select comfort for 2 years now. We had a high end individual spring type mattress before that. My wife and I love the select comfort. It is a little pricey, but well worth it. I could go on and on about how I like the bed, but I will stop now.

I've not heard of anyone who doesn't like the select comfort. We tried a temperpeidic (sp?) but I didn't care for it. It forms to your body but it seemed to me that I had to nearly crawl out of the hole it made to turn over shocked.gif. We ended up with a Sterns and Foster for a little over 2K, but would probably try the Comfort Select next go around.

Thanks I think we are leaning towards the select comfort. We went to Hom today and tried out the Temperpedic and comfortaire. I loved the temperpedic almost falling asleep in the showroom but my wife hated it. Stating that if we bought that bed I would have to find someone else to sleep on it with. I liked the comfortaire however I do think the select comfort was a much better bed. I guess we will be saving and going that route. Thanks for the input.

The sleep number bed is awesome! We bought one about three years ago and pretty much every night we get into bed we say "Oh I love this bed" My back used to kill me every morning with the old spring matress. I have not felt a thing in my back since owning this bed. Spendy, but worth a great nights sleep in my opinion.

we'll not give up our sleep number bed. The wife and I want TOTALLY opposite feels in a bed and its the ONLY way I know of to accomodate that. I'm a 60 and she's a 35, I can't sleep on what she likes and vice versa for her. I loved my old Sealy Postuerpedic, but the sleep number is the best for the two of us.

If you've got something of a special occasion coming up, or just want a night out, I believe most of the Radisson Hotels have sleep number beds in their rooms now.

My wife and I stayed in the one in Duluth last winter, to try out the bed.

Now, I realize you cannot totally know what a bed is in one night, but neither of us were impressed.

Again, I realize that you need to sleep on it for a period of time, but at least that would give you guys two things. One, a chance to at least spend on night on them, and the second, to get a night to yourselves???

I worked in a furniture store for several years and had alot of exposure to different mattresses.

Basically any of the top brands are good mattresses. And as for your back its just a matter of finding the right firmness or softness that feels good. All brands will offer a variety of options to fit all preferences. There really isn't ONE single brand thats best for your back you just need to find the right fit for you and all brands will probably have one that will work. The biggest thing is just having a new mattess, most top end brands are meant to last 10-15 years and if its a lower end mattress maybe only 5 years, but people don't replace them nearly often enough so they get back issues.

I personally have a Sealy because thats what our store carried and I got a good deal but they do make great mattresses. You can get a great matress of about $1000-1500 or you can also go higher if you really want.

Also sealy's are made right here in St. Paul MN so thats always a plus.

Sleep Number gets my vote, had one for 3 years now and absolutely love it. I have arthritis and if I am having a flare I can adjust it to my needs. Get one you won't be sorry.

One issue with a sleep number is the air chambers tend to hold moisture or atleast the use to. That moisture would lead to the growth of mold.

They might have addressed this issue by now but it was a big problem a few years ago.

In general though I haven't heard anything really great about them, they just have a good marketing campaign that is alot better then the other brands so people have the brand recognition with them over other brands.

I think you said you've pretty much made up your mind to go with sleep number. However, we looked all around and settled on the Original Matress Factory. We got their top of the line bed for less than a low to mid quality bed from all the big names and it seems to be put together better. I know they are spring beds, but we are more than happy with our decision.

I bought the sleep number 5000 about 2 months ago and love it. Had an expensive memory foam type bed before that for 3 years which over conformed to the point where the dent where i slept became more of a hole, totall y sucked.

Also they have make the air chambers now with a type of rubber that is resistant to mold growth.

The bed we currently have is from the original mattress Factory actually. I really liked it when we bought it. I have to say it has been a good bed for what we spent on it too. We paid almost half of what they wanted for the others and honestly feel it is much better. It has lasted us about 7 years. But since buying our new Bed Frame with a plywood platform having to loose the box spring. It just doesn't feel the same. Don't know if I would be happy with a softer Spring bed or not. I was thinking that having the adjustability just seems like a good idea.

i have had my select comfort for 7 years now. I love it. the chambers on my bed started to grow mold on it 2 years ago. called them up, and 3 days later I had new chambers at my door. the best in customer service as far as im concerned. as for the foam i dont thinks thats the problem. the problem is that im a 70 and the wife is a 30 so when i roll over i fall off my chamber and cant roll back. so i wake up. but if shes gone and i pump her side up to 45-50 i dont have a problem.

Those who have the sleep number bed. Do you have any problems with the foam in the middle of when you roll over. Or any other complaints?

That's one of the reasons why we didn't like the bed when we stayed at the Radisson. You could feel the ridge down the middle, even though we were both at 30ish.

Using a mattress without a box spring isn't going to feel right becuase most of the support you need comes from the box spring. The mattress is mainly comfort but the box spring is the real support piece. I wouldn't recommend using a mattress without a good quality box spring for very long. Your mattress won't last nearly as long without it and your sleep quality won't be what it should be.

Thanks yes there is a night and day difference from when I had it on the box spring to now being on the plywood platform. Select comfort says you want to have a hard sturdy plywood base with their beds so maybe that is the route we will have to go.

I also have a sleep number bed by select comfort. I could feel the foam ridge in the middle of the bed on the 5000 series, stepped up to the 7000 series, and that center foam was gone, also it felt less like an air bed, and more like an inner spring, with adjustability. Just my opinion. Oh, my wife and I realy enjoy the bed.
