New to bow hunting

Recommended Posts

This year I'm deciding to chase some deer with my bow. I have been using my bow just for bow fishing. so I never used sights, release, or a peep. So I went out and bought all that good stuff. Anyway, what does everyone set their pins at?(10,20,30) If I shoot at ten yards and 20 yards with the same pin it hits in the same spot. Thanks...

I set 1 pin @ 20yds. the other @ 40yds I only use 2 cause of confusion (there too close together) the 20 pin covers all 25& less the 40 covers longer,My bigest problem was using sights rather than open shooting which I still use.with sights distance estimation can be dificult rather than knowing your bow well and shooting by experience.

Where ya practicing now?? Where ya gonna hunt?? cool.gif

We got some hunting land about 4 miles west of Manannah. I got a trail cam up and I'm surprised with all the bucks that I have seen out there. I also can hunt up by Norway lake. I also plan to hunt a few wildlife’s south of Atwater. right now im just practicing in my yard and at my buddy's house. Thanks again for the tips...

I'm the odd duck in this bunch. I shoot a pendulum sight that only has 1 pin for hunting in the woods, but she sure works well and smacks deer. I do have another sight with 3 pins for hunting out west on the flat open country. Those pins are set at 20,40.60.

I'm with Harvey I shoot a pendulum. 0-30 same, 30-40 hold a litle high. How much? experience tells you that. I've only shot one deer over 30 at 35, for me conditions have to be perfect to take that shot at this point.

Your pin set up is going to be determined by what bow you shoot. If you have an older slower bow, your pins will be more spread apart. With newer faster bows the pins will be tighter and you may be able to use one pin for a wider range of yardages. Also it comes down to how far your willing to make a shot.

I have my pins at 10-20-30-40 yds. True, for most shots the 20 is enough, but when a deer is close, 10yds or less and at a steep angle you actually have to hold your 20 pin under the animal to hit it good. Learned this the hard way. Nothing beats practice.

Good luck!
