hoggs222
Anybody have any ideas on building a shed? I'm looking to store a few mowers, possibly 2 4 wheelers, etc. Are there any online sites to get plans? Where would you suggest buying a kit/shed? I am up for building one though. Roofer
If you plan on moving it to a different house in the future you may want to keep it under 10 ft. wide. You should get treated 4x4's for the runners, probably 3-4 of them and then build your floor on that. Get a bunch of good 2x4's for your walls and probably for the floor also unless you want 2x6. Get some 1" sheathing of whatever you want for the floor and then 7/16 for the walls and roof. You could also use T1-11 for the walls and not have to side it. This could get you started and I can get you some pictures of the tougher stuff from my shed if you like. The others here and myself will likely help you through it.You could also go somewhere and look at a few sheds or new houses and how they are built to give you an idea. For say a 10x12 shed be prepared for @ $1000 or more.
backlash 1
My dad once said, you can never build them big enough. He was right!
Macgyver55
I just built a new shed last summer. I had no plan, I basically just "winged it" but I think it turned out pretty nice. I built a 9x12 that replaced an old 8x10. Because of the size of my garage and because we have a gazebo, the city would not allow me to go any bigger or I would have. You're welcome to look at it if you want (I'm in Coon Rapids so we must live fairly close) I can give you an idea of how long it took and what the materials cost. You could get a pretty good idea of a materials list just by looking.
McGurk
A couple of thoughts. Some of the "kits" from the big box stores waste a lot of material. Make sure to do 8' walls finished so you don't have to cut any sheething. An 8x11'11" floor plan also helps cut down waste. I made a finished dimension 8Wx12Dx8H box with a 9/12 pitched roof on top for extra storage. I put an roughly 8x8 loft about 74" to the bottom of the joists above the floor for that is accessed with a step ladder that can be moved out of the way when not in use. I've got as much on top as I do on the bottom. If you need some rough plans, I could maybe draw some up quick and send them over, or just do a little more looking online. Good Luck, and build it as big as you can. You'll use it!
iffy
Thats one dandy shed Mac! I need to build one too and I sure like the style and functionality there. Get me those plans too!!
Barony
I picked up a blue print from Menards and made one based off that. I didn't order a kit and felt I ended up w/ a much better product when all was said and done. They had a number of options/styles to pick from and pretty straight forward instructions. PaulB
I'm also building a shed and have a question about the floor. I bought a kit from one of those big box stores, they'll round up all the stuff and deliver it, etc. Uses treated 2 x 4's for the floor base. I'm wondering if I put treated 4 x 4's under that, to keep it off the ground, if 3 would provide enough support. Planning on putting a riding mower in there, snow blower, etc. Shed is 8' wide. Also wondering about the best way to build a ramp for it, since now the floor would be 6" or 7" off the ground. Thanks.
hawkeye43
I built a 8x12 with 2x4s on the floor. I should have used 2x6s under the floor, too much bounce in the floor
BoxMN
Quote: I built a 8x12 with 2x4s on the floor. I should have used 2x6s under the floor, too much bounce in the floor I built a 4x6 outhouse, and I used 2x6 (trtd) even in that, for a more sturdy floor. I even used 3/4" plywood. Glad I did. Nice and solid, and if I was making anything bigger, I would for sure go 2x6. My outhouse even has 3 sliding windows and 8' walls, ha! When building it looked very overly tall, but when placed amongst the trees it fits in nicely and is very spacious inside. (I also used an RV toilet, and put indoor outdoor carpeting, beadboard inside painted white, a little hanging cabinet, light swithces for inside and outside light, and there is room for a small cieling fan if I ever choose. Trying to keep from wife making me build a new cabin So far so good...)
