ocf1
Thanks for the help guys, how would you fish it around docks? I mean how do you fish it back to you?
TurnUpTheFishing
Quote:I went out yesterday morning with a coworker (both he and I got the day off due to it being slow) took the canoe out on Gervais and I caught a small sized Smally on a beetle spin. He grabbed it as soon as it hit the water. not one bite on anything the rest of the day however. I really wasnt expecting anything due to the weather, but we got the day off so we went fishin. "smally" as in smallmouth bass? Ive never heard of or seen any come out of Gervais.
FishinChad
Topwater action has picked up in the last week for me.Buzzbaits around thick cover is producing some nice size bass and pike.
st.crioxfishin
I like to skip them under docks either totally weightless or with a small split shot. I also have a couple "tube weights" that you can insert into the tube to give them some weight. I skip them way back under docks and sort of vary my retrieve until I find one that works. Fish them like you would a senko. I'll admit I don't skip docks with tubes a whole lot, but it can be effective whether you're trying to emulate a baitfish by moving it at a good pace or a crawfish by working it slow along the bottom. Mr. Pike1
Shizzy, that is unusual to get a smallie in Gervais lake. I only say that because from a stocking perspective and also by DNR surveys I have never seen them introduced or native to Gervais lake. Some possibilities are that the species was introduced by local anglers. White Bear lake, Mtka, Mississippi river, and actually Silver lake (The DNR stocked about 22 adult smallies some time back for some reason)support a small mouth population and they could have been transported. The other more very very remote option is that long ago Phalen lake used to have limited connection to mississipi river and naturally some could have got in the chain of lakes and actually reproduced to a small population. Interesting to hear of a smallie in that lake.
Matt Johnson
Here's a report from the last couple days... Spent a couple days guiding a guy from Oklahoma for largies. The deeper water bite proved to be the ticket. We worked over some deeper rocky/weedy areas with either a jig-worm or a sweet beaver/ugly otter combo. The fish seemed to be relating to the bottom after this cold front, but they were still more than eager to bite. We also got a few of the kids out and on some fish (I have some cool pictures of them with some monster bass, I'll get those up when I get them off the camera). Some of the fish bit very light, almost panfish-like Just had to make sure the line was tight and you watched for every little movement... Got Tonka tomorrow... hopefully things continue... Mr. Pike1
The sky's cleared and the water was like glass so it was crying out topwater. I decided to take the Kayak out for a couple of hours. The bite unfortunatly was slow with only a few caught. The weekend is on the way and the weather is looking good. I am making run to the river to chase some Smallies. Could be interesting with all the rain the river should be up and water most likely murky so may need to alter my presentation to see what will trigger them in these conditions. shizzy
there is also the possibility that Im a dummy. I dug up a pic of the first one and upon closer inspection (while sober), wouldnt ya know it..... largemouth. Im sure the one I caught the other day was the same. early morning drinking and fishing from a canoe are the culprit on this one....

Doonbuggy
Three of us went out Saturday morning on a metro lake and found the bass to be tightly schooled up. We fished only the deep edge with jig worms and shakey worms. We caught six to eight on each spot, but also spent a lot of time moving around. Once we caught one we'd throw out the marker and hit the school, then move on. Watching the electronics was helpful in identifying baitfish and unique pieces of structure. Gotta love when you tell the guys that we should get a bite at any second and then have it happen! This is really my first year of fishing the deep weedline so I'm going to assume this is a classic summer pattern of fish tightly schooling.Oddly enough though, the spot that has been so good in the past has gone ice cold, but in a way it's forced me to find other spots that are producing fish.DB
Central Bassman
Hit the lake a few days ago for a few hours before I had to go to a fantasy football meeting. It was very interesting, hit a few docks with no luck, flipped some wood with no luck, and then decided to go fish some reeds on the north side of the lake. When we first pulled up I had one on right away. We went down the shoreline some more and didn’t get a bit at all. We starting seeing a lot of the reeds moving ones we would get close. We slowed down and starting watching for the reeds to move. We ended up catching about 10 fish and good ones by just watching/waiting for the reeds to move. It was really fun to say the least, calling out when say the reeds move then catching a fish. I have never been sight fishing before but this has to be as close as it can get to sight fishing. Just another reason why time on the water is very important for becoming a better anglers
Deitz Dittrich
Still no boat for the Deitz Dude... my brother and I took an hour and cast a few lines in the Croix for some smallies.. both of us had a Mepps spinner tied on... WE each landed 2 smallies and my bro hit a pike as well.. casting from shore. My bro had big fish wich went about 2.75 lbs.
mojoputter
Hit a north metro lake with my 13 year old son who is addicted to bass fishing, started out a little slow but after figuring out what they wanted had pretty good luck. Once again the lad out fished me. He must of used 8 different baits and it wasn't until I put on a green shaky head that we figured what they were looking for. As soon as that worm hit the bottom the fight on, little though, threw it back in and wham got another only this time it was something a little bigger and I might say a little more slimier, thats right a northern a 6lb. northern, there fun to catch but awful slimy. Fish caught son = 11 dad = 8 I had the biggest though. Anyone know when the next FM bass tourney is, I think I have a partner.

Mr. Pike1
Dietz, I know you have been boatless for a bit. Something you may want to try that I have become quite fond of is bass fishing out a kayak. It is great on those calm evenings or mornings to get out for a few hours. Just last night I slipped the kayak on my local metro pond. The fear I always have on this lake is it is loaded with Tiger musky, which I truely enjoy cathing on top waters or spinners from my boat. However, a 35-40" tiger when you are in a kayak can be kind of a scary experience. Getting pulled around the lake is the first challange and then at the side of the kayak one wrong move and you may get capsized and join the toothy criter.Anyway last night I got into a pretty good bass bite and landed 8 in a couple of hours on senko and topwaters. The topwater bite was slow so I focused mostly on Senko's. Most were 17" fish and on a calm night these bass can pull you around a bit as well. However, you can quickly on hook at the side with no fear.Anyway I am rambling, just something to think about I have found I really enjoy being in the kayak it is a different and fun way to catch fish. Deitz Dittrich
M pike- I have thought very hard about getting one of the pontoon belly boats.. I have a cabin near the croix, and want it for float trips... may even buy 2 of them so I can bring someone with me. The kayak thing does look like a blast! st.crioxfishin
Couple reports from the last week all the way up to today... I haven't posted in awhile.. On the 25th I was on the St.croix for a clubber and caught all my fish on a finesse jig. Brn/orange w/ a twin tail grub trailer. I caught them on steep dropping banks with some rocks or grass close by. I only had 3 fish over 14inches for 9.5bs. biggest one was close to 4lbs. This memorial weekend I was up north at my cabin and found fish to be very scattered. There was both a shallow and deep bite, but they weren't schooled up deep like they were over the 4th. The most consisten pattern was frogs in the rice, and spinnerbaits or tubes over shallow windblown rocks. Caught some on a dropshot deep, but like I said, not much schooling going on. Not a whole lot of size, biggest went 19", but lots of numbers of fish caught. This morning I got out again in the metro area before heading back to school this afternoon. I caught all fish on jigs in the pads with 4 over 18" and one at 20". The pad bite has really started to pick up on this lake and other south metro lakes. Won't be back in MN fishing for the rest of the year, unless I randomly come back home hope, everyone elses fishing continues to be good as the fall bite starts to pick up here soon! bassNspear
Well, i spent three days up in Bay Lake fishing Bay Lake for our Club Championship This weekend. The lake itself is a great lake to hang out on and enjoy the weather, but this time of year, is not the time to go up and bass fish it. Yes, the weather didnt help at all, but man i was horrible. We fished all the Milfoil that is in the lake. Caught all our fish on the outside weedline in 18-27 FOW. Jigworms, and Dropshots with Hard Nose 7 inch Red Shad worms. When i prefished it the two days before the tournament, i never got a line wet Thrusday. Just went driving and took the camera out. Found fish everywhere, along with big fish, but the weather itself shut everythign down.Winning bag was 10 total fish, 18lbs. It was a great time on the water, just wasnt the best of fishing. Fever
League championship was Saturday. We fished Waverly. 12 boats total. We could keep 4 bass and 4 walleye. There was also a side pot for largest pike that was worth 79.00 which went to a 3 lb 9 ozer. Anyway, winning weight was 16lbs 3 oz with 4 bass, 2nd was 15lbs 4 oz (four bass) third was 13lbs 5oz with 4 bass and one nice 4 lb walleye. My partner and I tied for fourth with 12lbs 15 oz and we had 4 bass as did the team we tied. 5th place was my brother and his partner with 12lbs 14 oz... Beat my bro by one once. Everything seemed to work that day. We fished from 7am to 1pm and we had our first four by 7:30am. I caught most of my fish on a wiggle wort. (like a minus-one) Also caught a few fish on a shaky head jig worm in 16 fow on a weed edge, caught the biggest fish on a black texas rigged worm in less than a foot of water way back under docks. Also caught fish on buzzbaits, spinnerbaits, x-raps, and jig-n-plastic trailer. It was an awsome day for bass as they had their feed bags on and were very aggressive. Our two largest were just above 18 inches and the other two were around the 17 to 17 3/4 inches. The second place team had a bass that weighed in at 6 1/2 lbs and was about 23 inches long. One of the biggest fish I'd ever seen in person. I'm happy to have gotten 4th but now knowing I missed 3rd by 6 ounces is a tad frustrating. My computer is down at home so I can't download pictures... I have a decent one of me just prior to releasing the two 18's. Gotta love fall fishing... I think its going to be a good one. Too bad time is so limited. Go vikes...
Mr. Pike1
Well, I was on some new water on Saturday primarily after walleye. However, the lake had many many areas that cried out for a topwater, senko, or other bass bait. Got a few small eyes and focused on Bass. Many fish caught in the 15"-17" class. The lake definatly holds some fall promise for pig bass and of course eyes. The lake is primarily managed for walleye and I did not see a bass fisherman on the entire 400 acres of water. Low fishin pressure, fall temps on the decline. I am thinking that is a formula for some hot fishing action in the upcoming weeks. I also will look to target some eyes and hopefully tangle with a tiger musky or two. I had a small tiger in the 5lb class hit a topwater on this lake and lost at the boat.I also got out on Monday night to a favorite litte bass pond and had high hopes of some heavy action. Gorgeous night but the catch rate was the worst of the year. I got two fish in three hours. Lost one Tiger musky that hit a senko under the dock to get my blood pumping but sadly he cut me only a few seconds into the battle. I was 15 deep into my types of presentation and all my favorite shallow and deep areas were hit....Well again I got a little lessen in why they call in "fishin" and not "catchin"
Bullwinkle
Out yesterday on a local lake for a few hours in the evening. Looks like the fish have been hitting the feedbags lately. Didn't do all that well on numbers but the fish I caught were nice fish. Biggest of the day was just a hair under 19 inches but I threw her on the digital scale and she weighed in at a solid 4lb 10oz. All the fish I caught were just rounded out in the belly area. Caught them all in 8-10 fow breaking from 5 fow throwing a creature bait. Slow was the key because of the rain we had the night before coupled with the approaching front today. It seem that they were pretty picky with the presentation.
