Had a slow day yesterday until I went shallow. found a spot in 3-4 fow, if not less, with sparse emergent weeds. Started out throwing a frog across the top, no action. Went to a spook jr. and walk the dog techn. and landed 4 in 15 mins.

Well, it really seems to depend on the lake. Some of the lakes I am fishing are suffering a real bad algae bloom and fishing has been a tab bit tough.. Others seem to be rebounding from that same algae bloom. I am starting to hit some fish on topwater in the early mornings with the overcast conditions we have had. But my main day fishing has been dropshotting and deep cranking. My wife got her biggest bass this morning at 4lbs 10 oz.. was a very pretty fish and she was pumped.. she caught 5 fish over 4 lbs this morning.

Just to keep in line with the months. I copied my report from the July forum that actually took place in Aug

I had my usual assortment of my top 10 go to rigs.

I started deep as I have been reading alot of post on the deep water bite. Tossed some jig and pig, cranks, and jigs with plastics. No real action to speak of. The cry of the docks and the shade quickly called to me. I had success on top waters for smallies and decided to pound the shade and pockets over shallow weeds with prop type top waters. Started with a few agressive 15 inchers, This was followed by twin 18" ers. Moved to the docks for some senko and tube action. Got a few 16 ers on senkos by docks and boats. I then got two pigs to close out the night. The first one on a tube and one on a senko. In the water I thought for sure the first one was a 22" fish. It turned out to be a hair over 19 but my gosh was that fish fat and thick and when I lipped it, it bite down so hard my thumb it actually drew blood. The other was 19 as well but it pailed in comparsion in size to the other 19.

In any event the total for the evening was 12 fish in just under 3 hours and some quality size as well so it was a blast.

Quick non fish related story. I always respect docks and boats if I fish the area and if I see people out never intrude. So I am tossing at this dock and I see a guy making a sprint out of no where to the dock. I real in and begin to slowy move on. He cry's out hey buddy. I respond by yes. He gives me a quick history on working on his boat for 15 years and would appreciate me fishing other structure. I was enjoying the evening and not in the mood for a verbal disertation on public water. However, if I were in a discussion state of mind I would have advised him that he might want to remove his boat and dock from said public water way and move it on to the land he actually pays taxes on and respectfully ask that he shut his piehole. I simply responded nicely, thanked him for his feedback, and moved on. He thanked me in turn and waved so all was well.

I plan on a few hours in the morning at the same lake.

With the low winds and water like glass I was thinking top waters. The thought was right on and I don't think anything can beat the exitment of a topwater strike.

I started with a hula pop and jitterbug with limited success. I then went to one of my all time favorites that being the Hedon product line. The Torpedo, tiny torpedo, and I can not think of the name but Hedon makes it and you fish it walk the dog style.

Anyway the Torpedo was the ticket and I got some bonus action. I got into 2 tiger musky's on the Torpedo that crushed the surface and gave me a great battle. Each Tiger musky was in the mid 30 inch class. I also picked up about 12 bass on this but everything was under 17 with exception of one nice 18 incher

I decided I of course had to see if anything was under the shady side of a few of my favorite docks and pontoons. The dock bite was slow and I only managed two bass. However, again a tiger musky crushed me this time on my Senko while on the retrieve. This fish was in the mid 30 inches as well and what a battle on 8lb line.

I then decided an on an aggressive buzz bait to really lite up the surface. I got only one bass and you guessed it another tiger. This one followed right to the boat. I was about to lift up and like a true musky crushed me next to the boat and took off for the deep. Another mid 30inch tiger.

That was Sunday. I had today off and snuck out for just a few hours in the morning. Did not start out good as my motor decided it was to early and decided not to start. Appeared flooded which is odd but anyway I had two fully charged batteries and a trolling motor so I was off. The bass bite was very slow. A few fish caught on the Torpedo and tiny torpedo but all in the 15inch class. Then on my tiny torpedo this time with 6lb mono I got crushed by yet another tiger. This one went 36 inches and a gentleman saw the battle and came out to his dock and was kind enough to take a quick photo. I will post at later time.

Anyway the top water bite appears to be on for Bass and Mr. Tiger musky. Oh and when I got back to the launch the motor started up and ran like a charm.

Hiya -

I got out a little bit last weekend...

tried one of my favorite smallie lakes, got a few small fish up on the rocks, but the bigger fish had gone out to sea. Marked them suspended 12-14' down over 35 feet and very scattered. Scraped up a couple strolling a jigworm, but was very inconsistent - even more so than usual when they're suspended. Didn't have the time it would have taken to dial them in, so I bailed out (I know when I'm beaten wink.gif) and headed to a largemouth lake down the road.

Fished a huge bay full of scattered rushes and cane. Got a couple flipping the cane, but was overcast and fish were out on the edges so caught most of the fish (a dozen or so) on spinnerbaits or buzz frogs. Then moved into the deeper part of the lake and cranked some deep coontail weedlines. Sort of typical summer stuff - find a school, and you'd catch 4 or 5 in 10 casts, then need to find another group of fish. Could have gone back to some of the schools and caught some more on plastics I'm sure but was windy so fishing a jigworm deep was sort of a nuisance, the moss outside the weedline made a football jig or jig and pig a non-starter (and the line on my drop-shot rod was so twisted up it was making me crazy shocked.gif), so I just stuck with cranks. I was catching enough to keep me happy. Ended up with one 20-incher, a few in the 17-18" range, and quite a few smaller ones - 20 or so I suppose. Caught most of them on a Poes 400, a couple on a DT 10. Fish were on the edge of thick coontail in 18-20 feet, but up off the bottom a ways.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

OCF, correct. A property owner saw the battle and came out to his dock to watch the show. Once safely landed he offered to take a picture from his dock.

It was a bit of a distanse so not the best pic and for some reason I am not smiling. Did not have my sunglasses on so maybe a squint. Anyway those playing water volley ball need to careful with all that splashing could get the tiger to strike.

Oh and someone asked it was 36 inches I would guess 12-15 lb class

A 7" jigworm on the outside edge continues to produce for me. A nice underwater point where the milfoil hits a sand/rock bottom with access to deep water.

Interesingly though the last two times on this spot I have gone out after work and the bite shuts down at 7:30. I would think they would become more active.

These bass continue to school well so maybe now's the time to try dropshotting for the first time. Anyone using a big 10" worm with success?

Funny how earlier this year I'd only fish shallow and now I don't even think about it. Put me on that outside weedline and I'm good to go.

Okie dokie.. went out this morning... and guess what?... Yeppers, did a little dropshotting.. ok.. a lot of dropshotting. I tooka bud of mine out (bullwinkle) on the boards, he said he would like to try and learn a little dropshotting.. also fished with Ham on the boards as well this am. Between the 3 of us we boated about 50+ fish. All but about 6 of them came on a dropshot. Bullwinke(mike) had only caught one fish on a dropshot in his life prior, and Im not sure Ham had caught any? ham finished with I believe 6 nice largies... Mike caught 20, here is a pict of mike with a double he and I had.

bullnd.jpg

I managed a piggie or 2 of my own.. but the heat totally had me havin a bad hair day.. LOL shocked.gif

dpiggie.jpg

Biggest fish for the day was a crack over 5 lbs I would say.

Nice fish deitz!

Well had my state junior TOC on friday, finished in the middle of the pack i believe. Caught 6 bass only 2 keepers off of the dropshot. Had 2 rockys, 1 pike, 1 sunfish, and a walleye of it also. Not the best finish, but i held my ground for not having fished out of a boat in almost 2 months, and have a third of my total weight last time i was there. It was at clearwater.

Whew, finally got a chance to post a report...

I've been guiding out on Tonka quite a bit and the bite has been pretty good. Finding fish both shallow and deep. Windy days are producing a lot of fish tight to the weeds as well as along the inside weed lines. Slow rolling a spinnerbait just inches below the surface has been the hot ticket. Breaking surface with the spinnerbaits every once in awhile doesn't hurt either. Also counting it down a couple seconds along the outside weed line has been working too. And of course, the jig worm or title shot/sweet beaver combo has been kicking butt too. Docks have been ok, but haven't been the big ticket so far.

Tonka has also been kicking out some muskies. We've landed four so far while fishing for bass, biggest only at 40 inches though, so not huge fish.

I also spent some time up in the Chisago area and mainlake structure is definitely taking the cake up there and the average size fish is pretty good.

Hopefully I'll have a few more reports within the next week or so...

And Deitz... looks like you forgot to shave grin.gif Sorry, I had to... shoot me a ring, I need some advice on something...

Just returned from 5 days in the Crosby area, focusing primarily on bass, numbers and size were above average and the bite was steady if you put in the time to locate the fish. The hot weather seemed to have pushed the larger bass out to the the very edges of the weedline, and working a dropshot with a 3" Yum Dinger produced alot of fish over the days, with some piggies too. Fish were schooling together and different year classes seemed to be hanging out together too. So completely working an area before sliding down the weedline was often rewarded with multiple catches on very nice largies in areas no larger than my living room. Most fish were pulled between 14'-18' feet of water. Did the shallow water pad bite too, but more small fish than large, fished the weed flats with DT10's and did okay, got sick of the northerns though and quickly went back to the dropshot.

Matt(mattwtech) and I got out to the st.croix on sunday for the first time. We had a decent day out there...we caught plenty of little smallies, not even 12 inches, and about 5 others that would have been keepers. There was a lot more grass in the river than I expected there would be. Most of our fish came off wood or on the edge of the grass on finesse jigs, and various t-rigged plastics. One also came on top in the morning. Hope the bite picks up a little before a club tourney later this month!
