New 2 pc rod won't come apart

HuntFishDude

Question

Well, I just got a nice new Shimano Tolora 8' rod and the dang thing won't come apart. I'm worried that maybe they put it together when the rod coating was still wet or something. Anyone have any tricks for getting it apart? I have tried pulling a bit and slightly twisting but I don't want to put too much pressure on the eye...

well don't pull on the fishing guides. You can try cooling the joint with ice, or heating up the joint with a hair dryer. You can also try a bit of WD40, wait abit and then try. You'll eventually get it

Standing upright put your knees together. Then put the rod behind your back and down behind your knees. With the joint behind your knees grab a section with right hand on right side- left hand left side. Firmly holding the rod and then press your legs to the sides. (This puts pressure, more then you can by holding and pulling with your hands)to separate the two sections. Apply a slow even pressure and you should be able to pop the sections apart.

Wow, can I have a diagram of that? grin.gif I did one better, brought the rod into the office and had a buddy on one side, me on the other and it did not budge! I think I will try hot water on the joint, then maybe soaking a little wd-40 in as was suggested before giving up on it...

Thanks guys

Very interesting... I can tell you that your initail thought is incorrect though.. They are shipped to the store in 2 pieces not one. So, it was put together in the store long after it was dry.

As for how to get it apart.. I might even take it back to the store where you bought it?.. Did you buy it put together and not ever had the rod apart?

Deitz, Good to hear it isn't shipped that way, makes me think I will get it apart. I could bring it back, just really don't want to make the trip and I didn't see another there anyway. I never had it apart. I'm going to try a couple things when I get it home... Thanks...

Its a regular 2 piece and I called up to Rogers and they said that some of their rods do come from the factory put together so...

I would doubt an 8' rod would be shipped assembled, the shipping costs would be very high.

So did you even try it? you can put more pressure on the rod then you and your buddy holding it worrying about who is going to break it. Take fly rods apart this way all the time.

I have had this happen with fly rods before, it takes two guys, both guys hold onto the upper and lower sections, as best you can with the hands spaced evenly, a little (key phrase LITTLE) twist motion as you both pull and push will be better than a tug of war on the rod.

Well, I tried letting WD-40 soak in over night and tried BobbyBass's method ( Which is a great tip BTW), still no luck. Guess I'll be returning the rod next week. Guess I'll be checking this in the future while at the store! Thanks for your help!
