Whew!

Well, we know they come in different colors based on Joels harvest from last season. grin.gif

As far as sizes, they sure do. My Dad had the smallest registered at the station by our place a couple years ago. A whopping 12 lbs. shocked.gif

They sure were good about reminding him of that as we stopped in over the course of the summer. LOL

No, it's not Kieffer Sutherland, it's our very own LackingBigBass (aka, Captain Buzzcutt). Note the uncomfortable sneer, tense facial expression, and generally displeasing look ultimately resulting from a bad haircut. The only mercy shown in this photograph is the occurence of a hunting cap, in the current situation, not an accessory, but a necessity.

I now submit exhibit "B."

BLB: I haven't alienated you.I'm around.As a matter of fact, I'm going to do a little scouting this weekend so I can find the biggest,baddest turkey in them there woods and pattern him out so I can nail him for our team come my season!! Might have to go out and by a double oven cause I'm sure he won't fit in a regular one!

Well team 2 guys, I went down and did a little scouting yesterday and saw lots of birds.Mostly groups of 5 to 7 hens with 1 or 2 toms following along strutting their stuff trying to impress the ladies. They seemed to be getting the cold shoulder though. Saw toms on or next to all 7 pieces of land I have permission to hunt on except for 1,and that piece of property has always been my best spot,so I'm not worried about that.

Now as long as the birds haven't been spooked to badly by the time I get to hunt come May 8th,I'll be fine. Come on May 8! Those Minnesota birds are waiting for me!

I will be going to SD. April 21 to try for a Merriams or 2 or 3. I'm ready to say the least!

Help me out here teammates . I just read an article in the Outdoor News and there are like 5 or 6 different types of turkeys . I'm going to guess that Eastern is the type found in WI . One guy said he was going to hunt Mn. for Merriman and sounds like they are indiginous to MN. One type was found in Mexico only and one in Fla. Thats how I arrived at Eastern . Before you call me names for not knowing remember you weren't born with that 12 guage in your hand , every one has to start somewhere . Thanks .

Easterns are the most common. All over the mid-west and a good chunk of the rest of the nation. It is the turkey you will hunt in MN and WI.

Merriams are the birds in the western half of the SoDak, Montana, Nebraska a good chunk of Colorado...etc. generally a hills and plains bird. Beautiful white band on it's tail feathers.

The Rio Grande is a bird of the South. Most are shot in Texas and Oklahoma. Some as far north as Kansas and I hear there are huntable birds in Oregon.

The Osceola is the turkey found in Florida. It is only found in Florida. Usually the 'hardest' bird to get to complete your grand slam, mostly because it is in such a small area.

These above four birds constitute your American Grand Slam of turkeys. The next 2 constitute your North American Grand Slam. To date you need to go to Mexico to get them.

The Gould's turkey is the biggest of the North American birds. It looks like a giant Merriams. It is in Northern Mexico and some are even in Texas and Arizona. Arizona is working on managing their flock to have a viable population for a limited number of licenses.

The Osceolated is a turkey of the jungles. It is beautiful! It is probably the hardest turkey to hunt not only becuse of it small geographic area it inhabits... but because of the work involved in getting to it. It is also an expensive hunt.

I think I hit them all...

Thanks Ken . I'll be getting a turkey in Wi. , around the Webster area . Season runs from , for me , April 27 , 28 & 29 . When we began to plan for this season the weather was beautiful , now not so beautiful . I'm guessing hunting tactics for warm sunny weather are different from the cold wet stuff we might have at the end of April , any tips for bad weather hunting ?

Wet weather I usually hunt the more open areas like fields, pastures and roads. I actaully have had excellent luck hunting in the rain and even in the snow. Birds become a bit more predicatble in their movements when it's wet altough they tend to be less vocal.

Sorry I didn't show my face sooner guys, but I am a Team 2er also. I don't know how much good I will be to you but I will try.

I also had to show up on this thread because it seemed like my brothers were taking a beating in the trash talking department. We just can't have that now can we? Remember, there is strength in numbers. So all of you other teams............................EAT OUR GIBLETS!!!!!
