Drew14741
I am taking my first trip to Canada in June, and I was wondering if anyone had any jigs they have been successful with for walleye. I have never fished much for walleye and am just getting started with my tackle. Any info would be great.
tunrevir
Find out the depths you'll be fishing and get jigs that will work for those depth ranges. In general you'll want to have an assortment of 1/8th oz up to 3/8ths in various colors I like green, pink, chartruese, orange and gold for go to colors. I like the widegap hooks on both short shank and long shank. Short mostly when tipping with bait and long for both plastics and when tipping with live bait. If you are looking to use plastics look for a jig that has a barbed collar to help hold the plastics in place. Basic round heads for vertical applications, stand up heads when hopping the jig along a cleaner sandy bottom, pillheads when fishing in current but regular roundheads will work fine for most applications. I assume since it is a Canadian trip you will have a rocky rubble type bottom for which the round heads will work just fine. Hope this helps, plastics can be awsome on the Canadian shield lakes and you don't have to waist time or energy reaching into the bait bucket especially on colder spring mornings.Tunrevir~
clamtrap
I go up to canada every yaer and what tunrevir said is about right I'm heading up in August for the first time in the summer months I like going in the fall but it gets alittle cool up there in sept. but to the point the fishing might be a little diffrent in the summer so I will be learning a little to so I'm thinking that I will be trolling shad raps and doing a little lindy rigging so thats just a little of what I know plastics are a really big part in the fall power baits but this helped a little. river huntfish
Just a hint not having anything to do with jigs. In my experience of Canada fishing we always catch a mess of fish. The hands get really beat up and it's not fun when that happens. Bring some gloves thats my opinion
youngie22
Just me, but when in canada, it always seems I end up using a multi colored gumball or fireball of some sort. Usually has some black, chartruese, red and or orange. Just what I seem to like. Have a blast & good luck!
BobT
Been going up to the Lac Seul area for a 4-day trip in the first two weeks of June every year since 2000. For the first couple years I brought my entire tackle box. I have refined my gear now to two rods (one for backup) and a small plastic box big enough to hold 4-6 dozen 1/4oz. jigs. Type and color doesn't seem to matter much. Typically catch and release well over 100 walleyes a day. What else do you need?Bob
eyehead
On most canadian lakes you can pretty much throw out anything in your tackle box and catch them. We went to a lake a couple of years ago and there wasnt a lure in my box they wouldnt hit, actually got sick of catching walleye's Good Luck and Have fun!!! fisherman-andy
Yeap, just do what everyone is saying. Buy an assortment sizes of jigheads and twister tails. The fish aren't too picky up in Canada. You can pretty catch them on anything in your tackle. I've done it on bare hooks...
Northlander
For live bait I also like the firball jigs by Northland and when using plastics the angel eye jigs have been great for me.
basskid
for live bait look no farther than the northland fireballs.

mrmanners
Mimic minnow, I know it sounds odd but the bigger mimic minnow will allow you to boat a wide variety of fish from Northern to walleye. My wife caught a 12lb 8oz walleye on one just jigging it.
