Cabelas stopped carrying MarCum flashers

Two or three years ago Cabela's didn't carry Vexilar for a while. Vexilar put them on a "suspension" because they were selling there own bundles instead of the Vexilar pro-packs etc. I was lucky enough to buy one of the Cabela's bundles with a FL18, pack, charge monitor, battery, and case for about $75 cheaper than the same exact thing from Vexilar. It was only for a very short time, but now Cabela's only sells the Vexilar brand packages. Could Marcum possibly be pulling something similar?

Guys, as we all know, fishing and hunting is seasonal. Retailers don't want over stock items from one season to the next. It's the same with any retailer. Thats why we'll start to see Valentines Day stuff showing up on store shelves a week after Christmas. As far as Marcums go, I think retailers are limited to how many units they can order. You can't really blame the retailer if the manufacture can't pump them out fast enough.

I don't know how cabela opperates but i work at maplewood Gander and we have had a current supply of all marcum flashers and vexilar flashers as well as cameras.

We currently have 8 lx-5 units, 5 lx-3 units, 6 Vx-1 units,

5 vs 250 camers, and 5 vs 350 cameras.

as for vexilar we have plenty of fl-18, fl-12 and fl-20.

currently sold out fl-8s.

It sounds like Maplewood Gander has some Marcums sitting on the shelf collecting dust. And I know they have some of the Giude series flashers, which I believe are made by Marcum.

The name of the game is "the early bird gets the worm". Plus with all the online shopping thats available now a days it shouldn't be that hard to find what your looking for.

I think everyone should make their own decisions based on what they see. While you're at it, check out the Cabelas in Owatonna. It was so shameless, I started counting.

-Vex

-4 endcaps - different locations

-3 shelves - different locations

-3 Vex units out on display at Electronics Case

-1 vex set up in fish tank

-evenly distributed at all ends and center of fishing electronics dept.

Marcum

-Middle of a short clustered up shelf

Nothing on display for the Marcums and certainly not in prominent locations. Certainly not saturated like with the Vex's either.

But like I said, don't take my word for it. Check this out for yourself.

My interest is that folks that don't know much about either unit, get an equal shake at each. Make your own decision with what flasher you choose, but let it be an informed one.

  • we are 'the leading edge' HSO Creators

Vex has a huge inventory they need to get rid of so they work with the stores to push MarCum to less visible locations to gain a competitive advantage.

I know for a fact that MarCum is well prepared to send re-orders to Cabelas and it can be in their hands tomorrow.

You folks are the ones who will cause them to re-order if they are out.

Just put the pressure on the Cabelas or other reps to have all the brands in house for you to decide what you want.

I'm going to put a plug in for the small local bait and tackle shop. They stock models of Marcums, Vexilars and Aqua Vu cameras. Do they stock 10 - 15 deep in quantity? No. They re-order often. Their prices are often the same as the big-box stores. So if you're looking for flashers and cameras, check out the local bait and tackle dealers. They are friendly, knowledgeable and have good prices. In fact, some are able to get a very limited supply of Aqua-Vu cameras (including the SPC-80 color version and the DT).

Also, Fleet Farm just put out a flyer in the Mankato paper advertising the Scout camera for $179. Small bait shop close by has a price of $149 - $25 rebate (rebate offer expires 12/31). That's been their price all winter.

So if the big-box stores are out, give the local bait and tackle stores a call. They'd appreciate your business.

Ditto to JRFISHBAIT. Check his store out and realize that you don't have to just buy at the big stores to find a good deal. If I'm making a 300 dollar purchase I'm not going to pay 320 dollars at a big name store when I can get it for the 300 at a smaller store. I really don't care where I buy it as long as it's a good price.

I am all for the small business and always support them when I can.

The reason I like Cabelas is their 100% satisfaction guarantee, not happy with something after 2 or so years...take it back, this is why I spend so much money there.

What is the market share between Vex and Marcum?

How long have they both been around?

How many units of each has been sold this year?

I realize that there are a lot of guys on this site that are probably sponsored by Marcum and they may very well have a great product. Lets not get so carried away about retail space and every aspect of Marcum's existance.

Store's are in the business of making money. If they find they sold out of them this year and are losing sales and market share they will order more next year. Anybody that wants a Marcum can track one down.

I was going to pick up some ice saftey picks at the fleet farm by my house this weekend. They were out, lets all bash fleet farm.... Calm down people!

It's not about JUST MARCUM people! Right now with the winter how it is retailers are cancelling a lot of orders to manufacturers. So since they only had X number of Marcums and those were sold they aren't reordering for fear of a bad winter season. The reason Vex's are still on the shelves in more spots than Marcum is because they have more of them and are trying to get rid of them!!

Yeah, and the end caps and big displays were filled with orange ice scoops and you couldn't find the red ice scoops. They were tucked under a shelf, almost out of sight!!!! shocked.gif

Or Perhaps Maybe more people are buying Marcums, because it is a better product for less money? Just a Thought.

Oh..you guys didn't hear? Vexilar bought out Marcum and will be discontinuing all Marcum producuts...Cabelas was just the first to sell out! Thought everyone knew that.

Calm Down People. And the above passage was totally fabricated.

We have been selling a bunch of the Marcum units at the Richfield WI, Cabela's store where I work. LX3's, VXR's, and VX1's have all been hot, We just got a new shipment in so I think it depends on the store.

I think Rick made a good point about gaining a competitive edge.

I little off subject, but the next Gen DVD's are going through the same battle. Sony has "teamed" up with Best Buy with their Blu-Ray product. Good Luck getting accurate information or even a demo of HD-DVD at BB. Even though all the experts agree HD-DVD is the better of the two.
