How do y'all divide the deer when group/party hunting??

Recommended Posts

Just curious about how y'all do or don't split up the deer when you are hunting in a group.

1. Every man/woman for themselves?

2. Split everything equal between all hunters?

3. Everybody gets at least one tag filled (regardless of shooter) before any one person brings home more than one?

Over the last 30 years I have hunted with 2 different groups with rifle and a couple guys with bow.

For many years the one group of 8 that hunted together we divided all meat equally.

The guys that I have bow hunted with have always kept thier own deer.

The last 15 years in North Dakota it has been each hunter for himself.

All these years it has worked both ways as we have always been lucky enough to shoot plenty of deer. When bow hunting almost every hunter in our party has shot a deer or two. If there is a year when one does not have harvest a deer we then each give him a portion of ours so he also has some venison.

We always share if needed.

We all work together in the hunt so we all share the venison, after the hunt when it is time to process the deer everyone pitches in and helps. We don't take anything in to the meat locker, we make our own ring sausage, summer sausage, hamburger and jerky.

We divider our meat equally. After all, we were hunting as a party not individuals. If some don't want to divide then they can hunt alone just the same. We don't worry too much about who fills who's tag either. It's a team effort all the way. In my home, I have been the only one that likes venison. My wife won't touch it,...at least as far as she knows about it. grin.gif As a result there have been times when I still had too much left over from previous years. I have hunted anyway to help fill tags with no intention of bringing meat home. That works okay because the rest of the party can use all they can get. In this situation, I have opted to hunt with my .44 instead of my 30-06 or I'll strickly trophy hunt. This limits my chance of filling a tag but gives me the opportunity to get out anyway.

Oh, yeah. There is one outstanding condition. The shooter gets the inside tenderloins.

Depends on who I'm hunting with & what season. Bow & ML has always been you shoot it, it's your deer to do what you want with it.

With gun season, at least our weekend parties, we divide it evenly on who wants deer, but if we get a lot a deer & you don't want some, you're taking some anyway. If you don't want any, then you better not have shot any or kept hunting when you knew we had enough for the rest of the guys already.

I generally give most of my bow & ML deer away & just divide the firearm deer. Is there any deer easier to find a home for than a late season deer? There's always 2-3 willing parties for any deer at that time.

Fortunately for me, the fellers I slug hunt with are very good pals of mine. We don't care who does the shooting, gutting, dragging, etc. We just want some dead deer hanging in the garage without having to spend a lot of time out there getting them.

Monday, after the shootings done we butcher in my garage. We go from dead ones hanging, to packaged meat all in one day.

One fella likes hunting and his family doesn't like venison so he only takes a little. The other 2 guys are told,"Take what ever you want." I take the rest. It all ends up pretty even.

Our party divides it all up equally. But, that is easy when most of us our family. We all hunt until we fill out, but the people that have not seen or gotten a deer get the best "spots". I like it, for I have gotten at least 2 deer a season for about 15 years in a row now.
