I just was up checking on my permanent shack on MilleLacs and had a hard time getting the key to work the lock properly, Any suggestions on lube or sprays that will not freeze? It has never been a problem before, but just want to make sure it's ok before its on the ice.

locksmiths always recommended putting powdered graphite in the lock cylinders to keep them lubed. The biggest problem I always had with this was trying to get the powder in deep enough. I used the powder and wd40 to help it penetrate and never had a problem with locks freezing up in 40 below air temps.

Hello,WD40 is alcohol base product, thus during evaporation process h2o will be a byproduct.Below 32 this will become "icie lock"hope this helps some,as stated previously powder graphite is your best choice. There is an aviation grade lube that performs to -50 below but i can't remember the name of it. smile.gifc63

Frabill has a product called SUB ZERO Lube, it is the real deal for situations like this. It is made for tip-up shaft lube jobs and ice reels, ice auger linkages, and excels on portable sled poles, hindges locks whatever you wish to keep moisture out and working smoothly down to -60. Good stuff, darn handy. It retails at $4.99.

Powered graphite is a recommeded lube for locks. It comes in a tube and can be pushed into the lock by squeezing. Putting some on the key is another way to get it deep into the lockset. It is also very easy to pull the lockset and lube it up that way. Once a year is good enough. I use it on all my outdoor locks, including the fishhouse and haven't had trouble with freeze up. .
