Tyson (prime) VS. Ali (prime)

The Tysons of Ali's time where Charles (Sonny)Liston, George Chavalo, and guys like Oscar Bonavena and in later years, Smokin Joe Frazier. For the most part, he handled those guys pretty good.

But, he used to let guys hit him in the midsection and on the arms, when he was on the ropes...with Tyson in his prime, I don't think Ali would have been able to stand up to it?

Tyson wasn't just a hard punching palooka, he could box and he could trap and his bobbing and weaving style would have nullified Alis jab, plus he had the stamina to go for awhile!

I believe that in his prime, Tyson could have and would have taken out any of the fighers from that era, including Smokin Joe.

I think the only one that would have had an outside chance because of his size, strength and punching ability would have been Foreman and I think he would have had to land the big one early!

And, since we are talking boxing, as far as Rocky marciano goes, I don't think he would have lasted two rounds with Tyson!

This would not be a fair fight. Ali was such a superior fighter w/Angelo in the corner. Tyson fought on intimidation. People have this strange fascination with Tyson. He will never be in the HOF and he never beat anybody big

Holyfield would be a better match

Its a different game today. The quality of the boxers 20-30 years ago was better than today. Many great boxers of the yesteryears.

Tyson hardly had to ever go to 6 as he knocked them out.The older better boxers I dont believe he could do that to.They were smarter fighters.

Ken Norton was a little different with his peek a boo defense.. I think the boxers now are far more superior now because of the training and nutritional advances. Although I would like to bring back 15 RD fights.

Kenny Norton was a one dimensional hulk, big huge upper build, had about a 14 inch waist and spider legs, relatively speaking, in comparison with the rest of his upper body.

Never did think much of him and if he could get to Ali, Tyson surely could have! Geeze, I seen Henry Cooper lay Ali out and all Henry had was a left hook and nothing to go with it!

Don't get me wrong, I seen all fighters from back then, I got interested in boxing when Floyd Patterson was the heavyweight champ...that goes back aways!

I didn't just watch boxing on the tube, along the way, I was a sparring partner for about 6 months to one of our state lightweight champions, when I was in my mid twenties...but I digress.

One of the posters asked, "Who did Tyson fight?" the answer to that was everyone they put in front of him and he always ended up as the last man standing! He went the distance a couple of times, so he did have the stamina. No fighter got ducked and there was no preferential treatment, Tyson made sure they all got a good dusting!

Ali was my favorite heavyweight fighter, but it was a different time and place. He is still my favorite, but I still think Tyson in his prime would have gotten to Ali in his prime, but we'll never know that now will we!

They had a computer work up once pitting Ali against Marciano and the computer said Marciano would have won, yeah, right! Must have been the guys from that era that worked up the program they used! Now in my opinion, Tyson would have went through Marciano like chit through a tin horn!

Anyways, it's all speculation, water over the dam, Ali is still world renowned, an ambassador, know wherever he goes and Tyson is beating up wanna be's and doing a soft shoe out in Vegas for what is to him, nickles and dimes.

Lee...Throughout heavyweight boxing history, the top of the division has had it's share of Palookas. The real fighters are in the lighter weights.

I don't much care to watch like flyweights and bantams and I'm not much for the Jr. weight catagories, but from Lightweight to Middleweight, there has always been terrific fighters, then and now!

How do you match a Sugar Ray Robinson, Carmen Basilo, Tony Zale, Curtis Sheppard, Harry Greb, Emile Griffth and the list just keeps going, all the great latino fighters, the fighers out of Kronks in Detroit, or the fighters out of Phillie?

The crop of todays mid range fighters would have more then held their own Winky Wright, Oscar Delahoya, Shane Mosely, Deigo Corrales, Gati, etc., etc.

I'm not up on boxing like I used to be...I still watch it now and then, but now I lean more toward UFC stuff.

One thing I will give the older fighters credit for, they fought with lighter gloves and the championship distance was 15 rounds.

I have to agree with the Grebe on this one. Ali was one of the greatest of all times (I just saw a replay of Ali-v-Patterson... must have been about '65... good stuff) but tyson in his prime could tear a person in half with those blows to the middle and Ali got hit quite a bit. Even when Tyson was tied up by another fighter he could get off a jab to the kidney that would kill the average lumberjack... I have never seen a fighter throw a punch as hard as Tyson could.

Now Tyson-v-Chuck Norris; that would be a fight grin.gif

Tyson was past his time in the sunshine when he fought Douglas. Because Douglas had a couple of bad fights and had trouble with his weight, didn't mean he was a lousy fighter...when Douglas showed up, he was as good as any and better then most.

A fighter doesn't just all of a sudden out of the blue, develope the ability to fight like he did the night he clobbered Tyson! It would have taken a hellofva fighter to beat Douglas that night and the past his prime Tyson didn't have what it took, although he came close....a younger Tyson would have finished him.

how do you figure tyson was past his time??? he was 24 years old and the undefeated heavyweight champion.....buster douglas was a 31 year old with 4 losses on his record already that were people tyson had already beaten badly....buster douglas couldn't even hang onto the title for 1 month before getting killed by evander holyfield....who was very unproven at the time.....

Past his time...he seemed to peak when he was younger then most...it seemed to me that he aged quickly as far as fighters go?

The specifics not being on the top of my list of things to remember, I thought he was older then 24 and Douglas younger then 31?

HE NEVER HAD A PRIME! HE WAS A FAKE FIGHTING RIGGED FIGHTS "SEE DON KING" AGAINST STIFFS, WHO EVER BELIEVES TYSON WAS EVEN A GOOD FIGHTER SHOULD GO WATCH ALLSTAR WRESTLING.

MIKE TYSON DOES NOT COME CLOSE TO RANKING IN THE 10 FIGHTERS OF ALL TIME.

I used to think Tyson could take anyone in their prime too until I watched a highlight video on him a few months ago and you see the stiffs he was knocking out. He COULD beat anyone if he landed the right shot but he would have a tough time with those superior boxers.

I will take Tyson over anyone when he was 19-23....the competition wasn't always the greatest but he blew them out of the ring. Even when he fought the bigger names they didn't have much of a chance!!! Iron Mike Tyson...enough said.....
