I might be wrong on this but I thought as long as it wasn't on the street It didn't matter if it is liscensed or not. Otherwise what would stop them from ticketing everyone who is restoring a car and it sits in their driveway unliscenced? Defintley fight this.

Fight it! I am sure the guy/gal just did not know. I do know a lot of cities require that you have a current lisense on any vehicle. I did not know it applied to trailers. It is still a bunch of dump. How can everyone know every law regarding this type of thing.

Yeah, I would have to agree with you on the neighbor calling it in, GrandDad. This is most often the reason things like this get noticed. I think most LEO's don't want to get involved, but some just take the easy way out and write it up without research. Fight the ticket, and hope that your upset neighbor shows him/herself so you can explain/show what a sweet shack it is.

I had a neighbor with a 5th wheel camper parked on the ROW behind the curb for a couple of months, and then all of a sudden he had a tall shabby looking fence around his backyard and the camper was moved out back. Frankly, I would have rather had the camper out than this ugly fence, but the city codes and other neighbors thought different.

Just get it out on the ice and it won't be an issue anymore! grin.gif

How can any city require licensing on a vehicle that is not on the street? What about vehicles that are not street legal? ATVs come to mind. We are not required to license them as long as we don't drive them off our property.

To say all vehicles require license, even those not on public roadways, opens a bees nest of law suits. In particular, they would also have to therefore define a vehicle. If I am building something on my property, what makes it a vehicle? Wheels? My wheelbarrow has wheels, my kids wagon has wheels. Motor? My portable generator has a motor, my chain saw has a motor. Motor and wheels? My lawn mower has both.

I think this is ridiculous.

I would take the ticket up the the court house and show it to the county Attorney and the cheif of police[with pix of your fish house in the drive way] If you do this I don't think you will even have to go to court to fight it they will more than likely drop it on the spot , In the town I live in this stuff dose not fly at all!!! It's not like you are doing somthing wrong your just building a fish house on your own property that you pay taxes on, Wow I'm really not happy to hear this at all whats next? tickets for open mail boxes, honestly I would have a hard time not fliping out over this....Sorry for the rant, good lord

Does your fish house have a current fish house licenses to prove it is a fish house? If not it than could be considered a trailer.

As long as you have a current fish house license on your trailered fish house it does not have to have a regular trailer license.(Double taxation)

Geeezzzz, I might be wrong..but as long as it was on your property, its does not need to be licensed. Like I said, I could be wrong...but I have been a cop for over 10 years and never heard this before. The only other thing I can think of...is perhaps your city has an ordinance against such things.

It might be worth contacting the officer directly and getting his/her story on it. Who called it in...etc.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.

I think the license is the last thing to go on, untill you license it as a trailer or fish house it's just a shed with wheels right? or trailer or what ever, And they don't know what it is untill you license as such, please let me know if my thinking is fubar on this,

If it's a fish house it dose not need to be licensed untill it pulled away for your house or off your property...right?

My guess would be along those lines as well, especially in the metro area.

I've heard some pretty strange stuff from co-workers of mine over the last few years... rules regarding garbage cans, trailers, automobiles, X-mas lights (J/K!!), etc, etc.

It took 2 pages of comments from mostly outstate people before Hanson hit this one on the head.

Many cities, especially in the metro, have ordinances about having vehicles, trailers, RV's etc parked in plain sight of the road. Your fishouse is on wheels which makes it a trailer first and a fishouse second. There has been a lot of publicity in recent years about municipalities discouraging people from using their driveways and yards for self-storage. Yes its your yard and yes you pay taxes on it, but cities can AND DO have rules on how long your grass is, trash in your yard or alley, unsafe building or living conditions etc. These are city ordinances voted in by your city council members.

Another complicated factor which is pretty new and hinted at by Hanson is Homeowners Associations. They have far stricter rules on what you can do in your neighborhoods. There are not many in Rosemount, but its possible if you live in a newer part of town.

Don't call and leave messages with the city. Call the police department on their non-emergency number. They are always there. Someone will probably have to call you back but they can explain the law to you.

You will have to go to court to get it fixed now, but if you have the right info you can get it thrown out or at least reduced to a fix-it ticket/warning since you weren't openly defying the law.

I would also show up at the next city council meeting and ask that they address the issue and maybe you can gather support for some type of ammendment to allow certain vehicles.

I wasn't trying to pick on out-state people. We all know its just different outside the cities. If someone wants to have 15 vehicles rotting within 100 feet of their garage they can, just not in the cities. I work in public works for the City of Hopkins and I want to be a LEO sooo...I see all sides of this issue.

powerstroke that is un correct in your last sentence. there is state laws preventing you from having 15 cars rotting away in your yard ANYWHERE in the state. the limit is like 3? not sure on the limit but yeah. exceptions include race cars, licensed vehicles, hot rod type projects and stuff like that. there are no STATE laws that say a trailer in your yard needs to be licensed (ie my 4 wheeler trailer) but they called it a shed? Cities have some screwy laws but i didnt think there are any that prevent someone actively working on something. And a fish house does not need a license for now. I could see something changing with that soon like a speacial fish house trailer license instead of just a fish house one. I have been told co's say technically you need a fish house license on a truck that you are watching tip ups out the window.....isnt that double taxation? laws are not absolute they are left to courts discretion in alot of cases.

I find it funny that if anyone sees someone that they think might have possibly maybe broken a game/fish law everyone pipes in with "call TIP" "call TIP" or "call the Sheriff" "report them" no matter what the circumstances but here everyone is jumping all over the officer and saying he/she should concentrate on real crime. A law is a law guys, and if he broke it he should pay the ticket, get in compliance with the law and move on.

I agree BigDaddy alot better things to do other then write tickets for someone trying to build a fish house. Yea a law is a law but have you ever been pulled over for speed and got a warning KatoMike of so i hope you paid for a ticket anyway since the LAW was broken

A law is a law and then there is real life. Our society has limited means. I believe that enforcement should focus on the laws that society deems most critical like violent crime.

As for your CO analogy, poaching is a major charge in their duties. That's why we have TIP (turn in poachers).

That's why we do not have TITNBAFHIHD (turn in the neighbor building a fish house in his driveway).

    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
