StrosLit31
Wanted to leave my crank down shack up at our cabin lake this winter. I dont want someone to pull up when i am not there and just hook up and down the road they go... Any good ideas on how to make your house so it cant be stolen? I thought about maybe putting a short strap for each crank down and then take the straps with me when i leave.
beer batter
Or a receiver hitch. Pull off the hitch when you're not there. My old house used to have one, new one doesn't so I'm a bit paranoid too. I'll be following this thread as well.
18 inch Crappie
Take the tongue off. Or I saw a guy once pull the wheels off his house in the cities here. Makes sense
deepportage01
I would take the the whole wheel& spring and drop down arm with you, I know one mine all you have to do is take one bolt out and the whole thing come off in one shot, I think this is beter than just taking the wheels, They really can't realy rip me off unless they steel a drop down system that will fit my shack...... this idea along with taking your toungwith you[if you can] should ward off any would be !@#$ !!@@$# !@#$%, pull your shads also. minneman
I put a "convertiball" balls in the couplers upside down and latch/lock it with a trailer locks on my trailers.

wolf
I made my tongue removable I also remove one side of the drop down. Granted if you saw the house last year you would have ran away anyways. this year it got stretched out and completly rebuilt so hopefully last years tricks still work
Scott M
What about other anti-theft measures for during the ice season? I've seen huge metal plates around giant loops that are locked together with a big Master lock that leaves no room for side cutters. (I'll try and take a picture the next time I see it). Are there other equipment ideas for preventing theft? I think the HSO stickers are a great idea, be sure to look (do a search in ice fishing) into those if you are on this forum and own a permanent. What about preventing propane tank theft? Just take them with you each time? I think I'm going to submit a request to "It takes a thief" on Discovery channel. That way after they broke in they could upgrade all the doors and stuff. Heck of an idea, right?Anybody have some on-ice safeguarding ideas? Eric Wettschreck
I've found that while the shack is on the ice, if you have something you don't want stolen you need to take it with you. Propane tank, tv, radio, heater, etc will be stolen if left on the ice. Sad but true. While at the cabin you can maybe try to tie a big mean dog to the tounge. Seriously, take off the tires and the whole crank down/leaf assembly.
dirtking
I try not to leave mine on the lake unattended. But while it is in storage or at the cabin - use best management practices as listed above and insurance. I have a Trailer Coupler Lock. You would need a sledgehammer to get it off and it would bend the heck out of the tong making it hard to steal.Cant do too much more - there are always ways to get in. If you re-enforce the doors and windows too well - they will take a sledgehammer to the side of your house and make a new entrance!

walleyeking19
I've seen people take only one wheel off, then take all but one lug nut off of the other wheel.
hovermn
Quote:I've seen people take only one wheel off, then take all but one lug nut off of the other wheel. At that point, why not just take the second wheel?I know that this isn't an option for everyone, and a little off topic, but my fish house is never on the ice unless I'm in it. Theft is a concern of mine, but vandalism is a much larger factor. There's just too much wrapped up in a fish house to let some punk kids destroy it without a second thought, simply because there's "nothing else to do." It's not just money, either. It's the time spend designing and building it, finding the materials and the finishing touches. During the winter, the house is my winter cabin Friday-Sunday. I'd hate like hell for someone to take that away from me.When it's in the yard, the tongue comes off, which is build to my demensions, so someone would have to stop by and fab one on the spot to take it. It could happen, but it's a pretty good deterrent I think...

I try not to put my self in that situation.
fishinalot
I agree. I would rather have someone steal it and turn it into insurance then have to patch up the mess thats left behind.
