I've got pulled over in KS and asked insurance and registration cards.

I showed insurance and...told officer I didn't have the registration card for my truck and never had it, he believed me after showing valid insurance with vin # on it.

I have and had many vehicles in MN but never, ever had a registration card, does it exist ?

Neiko is right. Part of your vehicle registration renewal form will say "Cab card" and it's to be kept in the vehicle. My youngest son got a ticket in AZ about 3 years ago for the same thing. The court dismissed the ticket upon showing prove of registration, the "Cab card".

Well problem is I don't have any vehicle older than 1 year, they are not new, just bought within this year, and all I had from DMV is a yellow paper with all the info, I guess I can put that in the glovebox.

Yup, you need to carry it with you in your vehicle and produce it upon the request of Law Enforcement. The paper work you describe from the DMV would meet such requirements. I cant speak about all jurisdictions....but most only have a “fix-it-ticket” type of cite issued when you cant produce it. It basically says that you have X number of days to appear at court or the local PD to produce the registration....does not cost you anything...just time...unless the vehicle is really not registered. In most cases...this is the same for “No Proof of Insurance” cites as well.

Not quite true. Take a good look at the back of your receipt and it says "If your vehicle is taxed based on the gross weight of the vehicle, you must keep this card in the vehicle at all times". Vehicals 1 ton and over and trailers are taxed by weight.

To be honest, I just dont know. so far in my 10 year career, I have never found myself in a position to be asking about trailer regs. Sorry, I cant help you on that one...I am on my days off....I could do some digging when I return to work and post an update if no one finds an answer first.

I am not sure about trailers. Vehicles.. I believe its the bottom right portion ofthe title that is the vehicle registration, next to the sellers notice of sale part of the title.

As for boats, when you renew your registration, the part that doesnt stick to the boat is the registration.

It used to be that when you went to register your tabs, you got a tear off portion back from mndot registrar. Now all you get is the paper that you take to dmv to register and that is your registration to keep in car. If I remember right its blue and white.

I always forget to put my insurance ID card in the vehicle, let alone the registration. Everytime I have been stopped the officer usually gets bored with me search and says nevermind I trust you (after I explained I would be happy to call my company while he waited). Some day I am sure I won't get as nice of an officer.

Good info though guys. I might have to dig up some sort of registration now...

I write about 15-20 "no proof of ins." cites per month....and about 1-3 end up not really having insurance. You would truely be amazed to see how many people are driving without insurance on their vehicles.

Has anyone else ever recieved a letter from the MN DMV where you have to provide proof of your insurance...either by snail mail or on-line? I guess MN went to a new system about a year or so ago...dont need to show insurance when you regs. a vehicle at the DMV...they just does a random audit by mail. I got one back in Feb...sort a neat idea.

Any thoughts?

Personally, I don't think one should be able to obtain his vehicle license without showing proof. We are required to carry liability insurance in Minnesota. Shouldn't we be able to substantiate it? The problem was that all you had to do was provide an insurance policy number but were they ever verified? Probably not as that would have cost a lot of time and money. What's worse is that we're more or less required to protect myself from those that do not have insurance. To me that is a crime in itself.

You were supposed to show an ins card when registering your vehicles. They had many cases where insurance was purchased, got card with 6 months/1 year expiration (but paid for 1 month) then dropped policy. Card still showed vehicle was insured, but there was actually no policy anymore.

Cliffy take note of this, but you probably know it.....I've guess you've seen all of the "tricks".

Actually this threas was aimed at your response as a Law Officer, I actually didn't know bout the card on title, I checked mine and....I already put it in my truck.

Thanks for the help guys....
