Question

I would like to move my deep cycle battery in the front storage compartment where there is no wiring. I have a trolling motor on the transom along with my electric start 15 horse evinrude. I would run the wire along the side of boat under the carpet to the rear.

How hard is this? What will I all need? What type of wiring, connectors to mount in rear for trolling motor and outboard?

I would like to tackle this project this evening.

As much as I'd like to I have no other spot for it. I can move it up a few feet only when Im trying to get somewhere but it would be difficult since there is really no where else to put it besides below my seat in the back.

I know it would help though

go to cabelas web site and order 6 gage wire they sell it by the foot so measure how much you need and order. you will also need ends for the wire it's best if you have a crimper but, i think you could solder it and be ok. for the troling motor end you could get quick connects so you can remove the trolling motor if need be i have them and they work awsome.

Like was said get lrge enough wire to keep the resistance low. If you are going to use crimp connectors, strip the insulation off and solder the bare wire that you stripped so the crimp connector has something to grip when you crimp it. This keeps the crimp connector from becoming loose later.

I second that! Definitely put a fuse right at the battery, or you are just begging for trouble. I wouldnt be as worried about melting a hole (although that could easily happen)... I would be worried about starting a fire or boiling/blowing up the battery if the wires short without a fuse in the circuit.

Thanks for the ideas - I will get a fuse also. can I have livewell, trolling motor and Evinrude electic start on the same fuse or would I need separate ones? I would assume separate.

Its called tinning the wire ,,,just heat the strands and get some solder between the strands so they dont flatten down when crimped on the eye connector ,,get a circuit breaker for Your trolling motor connection and fuses for the electronics ,,the motor starting wires my not need a circuit breaker/ fuse but will require a bigger size wire

6 gauge would probably be a little over kill for wire. Also it is really expensive a good 10 or 12 gauge should do you just fine. And yes it true with larger wire you will hve less resistance but most trolling motors do not hve 6 gauge wire coming out of them so you really won't benifit much with the larger wire since it connects to a small wire anyhow. Best size would be to use what ever size it on the trolling motor right now but I doubt it is 6 gauge probably is 12 gauge. And Fuse it as mentioned a very important step and yes you would want all of your electronics trolling motor and separated. Do you have two batteries or is there just one. Because that would change the beginning of my post. If there is only one and you are running everything off then you would want the larger wire. But I was understanding you to have a separate battery for the trolling motor. In which case you should not need 6 gauge wire.

The longer the wire run, the smaller the guage (i.e. larger) wire you need to deliver the same amperage. The size of wire comming out of the trolling motor is irrelevant. If the battery is located next to the trolling motor receptical then using the same size wire would probably work well. Move that battery 12'-16' away and the wire needs to be larger (smaller guage). In low voltage, higher current applications we need to move up in wire size quite quickly so 6ga might be appropriate in this instance- it shure wouldn't hurt.

Strip the insulation off,heat the bare copper with a soldering iron and apply solder. It makess the end of the wire hard and the crimp holds much better than with bare stranded copper.
