Thanks M.M.78, I'm heading up to that part of the state for work next week, so I'll bet I'll be scouting by Wednesday already. Any suggestions for camping and cabins(during hunting season)? Keep the tips coming, I sure appreciate it...

Well your best bet is Babbit for finding a room or a resort in the babbit area so you dont have to drive from ely south. Ely has alot more options for place to stay though. Depends on the weather you could find some nice camp grounds some of them start to close up around that time is the only trouble. Birch Lake Camp gound is nice still be a drive from the best moost hunting areas. I have see more moose to east of babbit and to the south then closer to ely.

I just got back from scouting up in zone 22. Thank god it will likely freeze before the season, because the mosquitoes, horseflys, and deerflys were insane.

Its definately dry up there so it was hard looking for tracks especially crossing the roads. I did manage to find some in a couple different area though and one of the logged off areas looked promising. I'm definately pumped to get one of those big buggers in my crosshairs...

I also saw tons of coyote and deer tracks despite the dry situations. Right before dark I saw about 12-15 deer including two dandy bucks, one tall curious coyote at 30 yards, and a momma grouse with little ones. The September scouting might include a shotgun during the day and bow in the evening!!! Fun, fun...

Congrats on the permit, I have hunted moose on three occasions in Minnesota. Twice in the BWCA with my own permit and once I rode along with a friend who had a permit outside the BWCA. I mean ride along literally as the majority of persons with a permit outside of BWCA just cruise logging roads in their vehicles until they spot a moose and then get out and shoot it. It reminded me of road hunting pheasants or grouse just on a larger scale. That's not to say you can't do it on foot. Just find some large clear cuts which have started to grow in and you will find moose. Grouse hunting in September is an excellent way to find where the moose are in your zone. You can then choose to walk the edges and try to call to the bulls. After hauling one out of the BWCA across a few portages their is a lot to be said for shooting them where you can haul them out with an ATV. Good luck and enjoy your hunt. I will be up in with a friend who drew a permit in the BWCA.

I plan on calling and patrolling the cuts and swamp edges although I'm going to do my best not to drop on in the water. I've already tried calling last September and know several people who have had great success with it. Anyway I know this is my only chance to pop a MN moose so I'm determined not to shoot one road hunting. Who'd want to look at a mount and think, "Wow, good thing I could get a good rest off the hood..."

Up in that neck of the woods, if you saw a tall coyote, I think you were actually looking at a Timberwolf. I live in Virginia and spend most of my time in the Fall in the woods around here. We really don't have very many coyote. In fact I have never seen a coyote up in these woods in the 20+ years that I've been hunting them. But I have seen 100+ T-wolves. Just a little useless FYI for ya wink.gif

Congrats on drawing the moose tag! I'm new to MN (moved here last summer from Alaska..yes..I left AK after 5 years in the Air Force..the wife wanted to be closer to the family). Just curious after reading some of these posts. How do most people hunt moose here? In Alaska it was fly- in hunts, ATV, raft float hunts, and walkin in hunts. What do the majority of people do here? Does anybody walk in (say a mile off the road just like you were hunting in the mountains) and set up camp and hunt from there? Yes..I know you have to get it out on foot over a mile...I've been on multiple moose pack outs over a mile from the road/ATV/flight pick up, etc..not always fun but very rewarding when you get that last load to the pick up point. Just wondering if anybody does that here?

Do people scout from the air with a plane before the season to see where the moose are hanging out? (very widely used practice in AK if you have a plane)

Are the road accessible areas mainly road hunters camping off the road?

Just curious to hear how it's done here. Good luck to those that drew a tag!
