Dietz is correct. You pick the head off certain plants. Some companies have machines you ride and some have you walk the field.I know some kids who have done it.When its hot out and you are in the field its warm. Its not the worst but you will work pretty good. Some companies also have a bonus at the end if you stay with it.It wont kill you and you will earn some money.Good luck and have fun.

I detassled for 2 summers when I was 14 and 15. Basically they pick up a ton of teenagers in a big school bus, and haul them out to a cornfield. Assign each kid a row and everyone starts walking down the rows picking the tassles off of the top of the plants. It is not alot of fun but it was the only paying job I could get at 14 and it was well worth it. I have tons of memories that will be with me for a lifetime. I do believe it taught me a great deal about work ethics. I can remember how great it was to be out in a field for 2 hours in the hot sun and all of sudden the huge sprinklers came on, Boy did that feel good. I remember making some friends and bringing home a decent check for a 14 year old. I would say go for it. Don't expect it to be a walk in the park, It is very hard work and you will be tired when you get home. Bring a ton of water and just roll with it. You will be better for the experience.

Not a fun job but not the worst thing to do esp. at a young age......I did it for 2 or 3 years and I have alot of memories from doing it....like stated before you meet kids work hard and get paid at the end of the picking season ( at least I did)It gets muddy at times and it can seem like the row goes on forever but they all end eventually!!! Good Luck and Enjoy cool.gif

I did it for two or three summers and it wasn't fun.... but like anything else in life, if you wnat something bad enough you gotta be willing to work for it. I still have memories of some of the things I saw and did during those days..

work gloves. top grain cowhide. I did some field work as a youngster, growing up in southern Minnesota farm country. Walked the bean fields and pulled weeds. Tough work, good money, good people. I loved it. Pay? This was in the early 70's, $10 a day plus lunch and a ride out to the field in the back of a pickup truck. Everyone should get a taste of farm life. Sure gained a lot of respect for farmers. Stop for a moment under that huge, blue, hot, dry sky. Look around. Makes one feel small.

I worked at the Mycogen seed plant in Olivia for eight years in seed corn production and research and did my share of detasseling along with a ton of other things. As far as detasseling goes I guess that depends how much you can take the heat, pollen, and long hours. If you are working on a strictly detasselling crew dont expect much per hour but you will get your hours in a few week period. If you are looking for cash my advice is to get a real job that will last more than a couple weeks.
