I got my plastics now how do I rig and use them?

Down to Earth

Recommended Posts

Well, I wanted to commit to a couple new things this season, and one of them is catching bass on plastics. So, I started small and ordered some Exude products from Mister Twister. Got a package of Comida, some Poc'it Dads and Fat Tubes.

On the tubes, what size jig should I be using?

And how do I rig the other two? I read about wacky rigging, but not sure what that means. Should I use regular ball jigs on the Poc'id Dads?

Should retrieval be a slow straight retrieval or a jigging motion? Any help on how to use my new toys/tools would be great.

Thanks.

Andy

DTE- rigging is only held back by ones imagination!

With a tube, use as light a weight jig as you can get away with and still have contact with the bottom. Somedays that can be 1/16 oz.. somedays almost 3/8th oz depending on the depth and wind you are fishing in.

The comida and the pok-it dad can be rigged on a jig head or texas rigged or wacky rigged... A wacky rig is when you put the hook in the middle of the bait so it hange horizontle.

Retrieves can change day to day as well.. I would say start with a hop or jigging motion with the pok-it dad and tube and a jerking motion iwth the comida!

deitz is right! also , especially with a tube or a comida. pay attention to what line weight you are using, as a larger dia. mono will slow the fall rate of a lure, compared to a thinner dia. some times this can be important. many times i have great luck using 10# mono and a 1/16 or a 1/8 oz. jig in open areas. as the rule; if it isn't working , experiment! i fish a senko/comida on usually heavier line.

My problem is that wacky rigging comidas/senkos are so productive (and fun!) I don't get spinnerbait or crankbait experience. frown.gif Although I have to warn you.. they only seem to work best from 7:00am-9:00pm during the months of May-September.

Well, everyone pretty much hit the basics already; but I'll add a little more.

-For the comidas, you will want a 3/0-4/0 offset wide-gap worm hook for weedless applications.

-With the tubes, you can fish them with a jig (as already mentioned) or for a shallow water, weedless application, you can rig them similar to the comida. You will probably want a 3/0 hook for the exude tube, but make sure that it has a wide gap. It can be completely weightless (works best with light line), or insert a lindy tube weight. Fish it slow, or fish it fast; bottom line---it will produce.

And as deitz mentioned, have fun with them! There is no limit to what you can do with plastics.

Thanks for all the help guys. I'm fishing a little reservoir down here Rochester Thursday night and will try things out. Unfortunately the water is mainly known for undersized 10-12" bass, so hopefully things will work out. They only way I've bass fished pretty much has been using a floating rapala as a surface twitch bait, so I'm trying to branch out a bit this summer and learn new techniques.
