Fish House for Summer Camping?

coldmark

Recommended Posts

Does anyone use their fish house in the Summer as their camper? I was looking at some of the large fish houses for sale and thinking "what if I sold my camper and used the fish house year around?" Do they make good campers? Thanks.

I personally don't, but have seen others that do!!! there isn't a reason not to, depending on your needs. if you are the type that pretty much only sleeps in there, there wouldn't be a problem!! I've even seen fish houses with A/C units on them for summer use!!! I have a family of 4 which would get crowded in my fish house, so I have a 30'travel trailer with all the ammenities!!! I've actually thought the opposite, what if I could convert my big camper to a fish house for up north?!?!?! besided being divorced, It might work!! shocked.gif

We really don't use the "ammentities" in my 24' fifth wheel that much. We used the shower once in 3 years and we use the outhouse 90% of the time. I would probably install an A/C unit and buy some sort of porta potty. I spend a lot of time dealing with the water/sewer on my camper and we really don't use it much. It would be much easier to haul a couple of 5 gallon jugs. On average, we use the camper about 3-4 weekends per year. We would use the icehouse/camper at least 15 weekends per year. Now to convince the wife!

lol, I have to laugh at the poster with a family of four who would be cramped in there FH as a camper.

We do use the fh as a camper, it's an 8x16 with V makes 8x20. My family of 8 (yes 8) sleeps very comfortable in it.

We will be down in se MN this coming weekend with it and numerous other spots this year.

Havent yet put AC on it but have looked at the free standing portable AC units and just may end up with one.

We also bring along a big dome screen room for setting up the kitchen in it. The only thing I would like to add to it for summer camping is an awning.

pics of my house are posted on these forums here http://www.fishingminnesota.com/forum/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Number=768565&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=186&vc=1

We just started using ours as a camper (4 of us) works just fine. We only use it for sleeping, watching DVD's or just playing games at dark. It works just fine for us, most of our time is spent outside anyway, either fishing, 4 wheeling, or just sitting around the campfire. Sure is cheaper than buying both.

Bought mine three years ago specifically for the dual purpose.Used numerous times camping and was quite the discussion piece.

Was mfg by a RV refurbisher and looked like a camper far more then a fish house!! Most thought it was a camper with some sort of weird trailering system.(lol)

Plumbed with water, holding tanks under sink, 110 outlets, and all emmenities one could think of inside it.

Make use of the investment and buy quality. You will enjoy it all year.

It is pretty amazing how many Fish houses I see being pulled down the road in the summer. I know the We Fest here in Detroit Lakes has quite a few being used as campers. At first I thought they were pretty strange but most are way better than sleeping on the ground in a tent.....And with the cash one has tiedd up in a Fish House it makes great sense to use it for mutilple purposes.

Thanks for all of the feedback. It's nice to hear it's not only possible, but actually quite popular. Couple more questions:

1. Do you have problems with fish smell in the Summer?

2. How do you level it? I'd imagine you could carry several boards and pull 1 wheel over the boards.

Don't think I can say the manufacturer withour getting in trouble although I always see many others mentioned. Have a e-mail ? I can send info & pics of one.

Or if you search Custom Fish Houses you will notice one related to a RV business.

I believe you can say the name, just no websites or links. People talk about brands and manufacturers all the time.

    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
    • Chef boyardee pizza from the box!
