grizzald
Well winter is ending and the open water seaon is right around the corner. For those of you who head up north past the border, which lakes do you take advantage of for those spring pike and walleyes. We usually head to Reed Lake which is about 800 miles north of my place. Fished a few other lakes in that area also and caught a 41.5 inch, 18.5 lbs northern, just a pig. Also, how many days do you stay up there? Last year we stayed 6, but this year were going for 10 days. Can't wait for ice-off!!!!!!!!!
bearplott
Northumbrian Resort on the shore of Abram Lake. We can access countless other lakes right from camp. This year we arrive on Saturday June 10 and depart on Friday June 16. Always a blast.
MuskyBrian
Normally fish the area between Vermillion Bay north through Perrault Falls, NEVER disapoints. I never stay on only one lake for a week. Wouldn't mind starting to check out some new areas but with my love for Muskies the choices can be somewhat more limited then for other species. CodyDawg
I go to Mahkwa on Lac Seul for 5 days every year. Been doing it for a long time. Always fun, always productive.
Down Deep
I like to fish a number of areas in southwest Ontario. I generally start off with the Baseline and Red Gut bays of Rainy in late May or early June. Later in June I like to go to Nestor Falls and fish bass and Musky on LOW and Crow. I've always liked Lac Suel in June and mid-August, but for the last few years I've moved down the English River to the area around Separation Lake. I also visit a few lakes around the Ignace area for late August and again in mid-September.
Mad Mulcher
Eeeeasy tiger. Don't go jumping the gun on this open water nonsense. We still have 1/3 of the Canadian ice fishing season left to go here!
Hemlock
Best ice fishing is yet to come. DeepDiver, you are actually referring to Northwestern Ontario when you name all of those lakes. I know when you think of Ontario being just north of MN/USA, you would think it would make sense to call it SW Ontario, but that's not true. There's your interesting fact for the day. Oh, and I fish Lake of the Woods from Kenora to NW Angle, to Sioux Narrows to Baudette.
Down Deep
Hemlock, I know the tourist information calls the area northwestern Ontario, but if I were trying to tell someone where to find Morson I would have to tell them to look in the southwest corner of the province. However, it is your country and you can call it what you want. All I know is that there is some mighty fine fishing in "Northwestern Ontario"..... Stratosman
We have fished Red, Eagle a few times, and a few fly-ins to small muskie lakes, always a good time. This year is LOW in Sabaskong Bay.
Keith_MN
Grizzald,I've been making the trip up to Reed Lake for 7 or 8 years now. A couple of my brothers have been going up a few years longer than that. We generally are gone for 9 days which gives us a full 7 days of fishing - mid morning til sundown. We started going up in the fall a few years back, rather than in early June. We may not catch quite as many fish, but the size of the northerns can't be equaled. If you've been going up for a number of years we probably crossed paths. Our group is kinda set on the fall fishing now though. We practically have the campground to ourselves, and like I said the fishing is great.Good luck this summer. Hopefully you'll break that 41.5" mark.
eyepatrol
We've been hitting Northwest Bay on Rainy Lake for the past 25 years now. It's a big family trip with my parents and siblings, my grandparents, and a number of aunts, uncles and cousins. Usually take up 1/2 the cabins. We don't typically go in spring though, 2nd week of July usually. Lots of walleyes and smallies, but the pike are on the small side, unless you travel quite a distance. Was up there one time at the end of May and hit Ash Bay. The huge pike were in there "sunning" themselves (water was 53 deg). Looked like huge tree logs on the lake bottom in 3'-5' of water. I threw everything I had at them and could only manage a couple small 8lb fish. Did have one of the huge pigs on for a little while, but she shook the hooks. Can't wait to get up there. Last year I missed going for the first time ever (wife was pregnant).
eyehead
We used to go to the Rat River but due to netting there just aren't the fish there once was. So we started going to Lake Eden the last two years and wow is that an awsome walleye fishery.
MinnesotaMuskie
I hit the Wabigoon River north of Vermillion Bay, Clay Lake, and Bowden Lake near Quibell.
Winona Ice
I've been going to LOW for 15 years. I'll be there june 17th this year. We usually fish sunset channel around cliff island for walleyes, and blueberry inlet and snake bay for crappies.
Shorelunch
I've been going up to the Morson area since I was knee-high to a grasshopper. We primarily fish the Sabaskong, Dawson, Basil, Miles and Raspberry areas for walleyes, crappies, smallies and the occasional muskie . . . and bluebill
island guy
Used to do fly-in trips but it no longer fits my budget. The Angle/island area of LOW is now my destination. Once in the winter and a couple of times in summer. A Sept trip can be fun, as you could combine a duck hunt with your fishing. Waterfowl season in Ontario opens around the 10th of Sept and a non-res license is reasonable.
FRESHWATER PETIE
For couple of years now I've been going with a buddy from work up to Caliper lake. It's just off hwy 71 south of Nester Falls. We stay at Larrson's camp on the lake. Caliper lake has some huge fish, the crappies are true slabs. Average crappie runs 15+ inches. The walleye fishing is'nt bad either. Pike are just about everywhere and the smallmouth are making a strong come back. The nice thing about Larrson's camp is it's only about an hour north of the border.easy in, easy out and alot of fun!! We get the american plan and they take real good care of ya!
fishanytime
Winona Ice,Where do you find the crappies in Snake Bay, I assume back in the shallow part.
Winona Ice
The crappies in snake bay are found in the shallow part in the back. Most of the time we catch them right before dark, but they can be found all day if you work at it.
