first banded bird

hi everyone i just joined a couple weeks ago. i shot my first banded bird this past season while hunting in one of my favorite holes in the early goose season last year. what was your first banded bird if any?

My first banded bird was shot out of a chopped corn field three years ago. It was shot thanksgiving weekend, i believe, and was a canadian goose. It was in a group of six where 3 of us dropped all six and i happend to be on the end where this bird was. I got a second band a year later during a foggy day when i shot a goose while i was standing in the middle of the spread.

I shoot my first banded bird about 5 or 6 years ago, a big mallard drake. About two years later I got my second one, again a mallard, this one was a hen though. Those are the only two I ever shot. I've never shoot a banded goose but I think that would be pretty cool.

when i shot mine there was about 8 or 9 geese i dropped 3 geese in 3 shots. didnt bother to bring my dog had to swim for all 3.

i am pumped for next season. sometimes i catch myself watching duck hunting holding my shotgun . i might try to get out to south dakota to shoot some snows. i'll see if i can afford to.

My first piece of jewelery was from a hen PIntail. Then I got a Tundra swan that had a neck and leg band (pretty rare) Two weeks later me and a buddy tag teamed a big drake Mallard but lucky for us it had a $100 reward band on it. So we both got a band from it. All of them were shot in North Dakota.

First one when I was 11yrs old. Of all things a COLLARED honker during the early season, shot it with an over/under 20. What are the odds

my first banded bird was a canada honker East of Fergus Falls in late season this year. we shot a total of 6 bands out of that spot.

My first bird was a BW Teal shot 10 miles north of Appleton (where I grew up) in 1969. I've shot a couple dozen more banded fowl since then, including redhead, wood duck, canada geese, mallards, pintail, wigeon and a merriams wild turkey, but my most unusual is a morning dove band recovered from a bird I shot bout 10 years ago here in Idaho. Incidently that dove was banded the prior year as a juvenile near Tucson,AZ.

My first band was a canada shot in early season '03 and it was bandad 14 days before i shot it about 30 miles north of where it was killed in Park Rapids. the strangest band i have ever recovered was on a golden eye that i shot 10 years after it was banded within a mile of where it had been banded.

well my dad shot one a week before i shot mine. it was 5 years old, and the one i shot was 2 years old. it was an awsome year for me!!

my first goose band was one of the 6 shot with kowalleyeski.

bands are one of the coolest aspects of waterfowling...not because they are something you can show off, but because they help us get a grasp of just how incredible the birds we hunt really are.

I shot my first band this year during the late goose season...only a year-old bird banded in Rice, MN, about 10 miles from where I shot it just outside of Sartell. I was beginning to think I would never shoot one, even though I'm only 21...I know a lot of old guys haven't even gotten one but after my 19 year old brother shoots 4 BANDS in just 3 seasons it starts to make you wonder.

He has shot 2 mallards that were banded in Saskatchewan and 2 geese that were banded in Rice, MN...all birds shot within 5 miles of Sartell. We're not obsessed with them like a lot of hunters are but still appreciate them when we get 'em. Pretty cool stuff.

I've been duck and goose hunting hard for 20+ year and only have 5 bands to show for my efforts:1 mallard, 1 honker, 2 snows and 1 redhead.

It's a matter of luck and luck.

My first band was on a Greenhead that was tagged just North of Mpls and I shot it on the Miss. by Brownsville.

Then I got a banded BW Teal that was tagged in Northern MN and I shot it in Shenndoah IA.

Hunting one small pothole in ND I got 3 banded Bluebills in 2 days. None of them banded in the same area and none of them had and numbers close tothe others. A person could probably jump across the width of the pothole and the length was maybe 20 feet. Don't what it was but the divers sure liked it.

I got one more in ND about 5 years ago.

My first band was off a goose, when I was 15. I added two other banded geese. Still looking for that first duck though. In time I guess.

Anyone see or shoot one of the color coded bill taged blue bills yet?

None with tagged bills. I got two banded dyed bluebills in 1986 (I think). They were dyed fluorescent orange under the wings. Guess which ones we shot at. You could really pick em out belly up in the decoys. The bands and certificates were destroyed in a house fire. I also got two sketch art prints for reporting them. I had them in my college apt. so I still have them.

I've got 9 bands and my son (8) has 2. His were mallards, one banded in Pennsylvania, and the other from Mass. I've got four from geese, 3 from MN and 1 from Manitoba. Two mallards banded by Coots Unlimited, one teal from MN, The two bills from MB. The bills were banded the same place same day, shot one day apart in MN.

You guys are lucky! I am fortunate enough to say that I shot quite a few geese and ducks year as I have in years past but I have never shot a banded duck or goose. However I did shoot two banded roosters in the same flush last year in North Dakota. It was pretty neat to look down at the spurs and see jewelry too. wont forget that.

A buddy of mine shot a mallard with a bill tag. couple of years ago though.

How about those Mallards that were attachted with satalite antennas from Arkansas. Anyone seen or shot one??? They have a tracking thing for them and when i looked last fall two of them were on Marsh Lake.

The first band I collected was on a drake mallard. That took place about 20 years ago. Four years ago I was hunting geese and I dropped a banded Canadian. About an hour later, I shot my second Canadian of the morning and it also was banded. I would not have believed it if I hadn't done it myself. The probability of two bands in one day has to be close to zero!

after waterfowling for 10 years in minnesota, north dakota and missouri, it took moving to alaska to get my first banded bird. It was a cackling goose that had a leg band and one of the yellow color coded neck bands as well. The same day one of the guys i was hunting with shot a neck banded tundra swan. Quite the day.

My first banded bird was a goose taken at Laquiparle. I have shot 3 banded and 2 neck banded geese from this area so I have been fortunate. I also have a snow goose and a couple mallard bands. I consider myself fortunate to have gotten some banded birds. As stated some hunters are never so lucky. Any band taken is considered a trophy and should be proudly displayed on you lanyards.
