Ice house rod holders

Depends on what kind of house you have. I know for the Clam Voyaguer I have the "yellow" colored pole holder that I bought at Cabelas. I screwed the bracket to the side metal plate and the yellow holder is removeable. In the voyaguer you have to remove the yellow portion which is easy and i throw it under the seat when i am not using the house.

A buddy has a Clam Guide and he can leave his yellow holder in when he flips his up since the poles are different than the voyaguer.

The clamp on style (which was red/silver at Cabelas) seemed cumbersome, however I am going to pick one or 2 up anyways because we found that the yellow ones are nice for the further away holes and would be nice to have a move-able clamp style for the closer hole so you have 2 free hands for eating and drinking! Sorry I don't know the brand names of these but those are the only 2 styles I could find at Cabelas.

Go to http://todaystackle.com and check out the Rod Rockers and especially the Rod Rocker IIs. I have both in my Otter flip over fish house. The Rod Rocker is on a seat and the Rod Rocker II sits in two teeny holes drilled on the side of my tub right next to me.

Let's not forget the rod strap that attaches to the poles and holds your rod.

Good stuff.

I would 2nd Big Deisel's recommendation. I just went out to today and went to Gander, Fleet and Thorne Bros looking at rod holders. I finally got fed up with my rods laying all over the portable (actually more like stuffed in-between the tent and poles) and wanted something workable.

I went with the the Otter (yellow) holders whose brackets bolt into your side metal plate on a flip-over house. I was able to get 2 mounted on each side and the house still folds up. I have a Fishtrap Yukon. At first I blanched at the $15 EACH price tag, but I cant wait to go out and use these!!!! These things are very slick.

The Rod Rockers looked good also, but couldnt figure out how to setup 2 on each side of the house.

Those rod rocker 2"s are great units and do one bang up job for balancing a rod for ultimate sensitivity. These are the best panfish holder to ever hit the market in my opinion.

Another holder, one being designed by Driftmaster, will be another rigid holder where a base is attached to to floor or the tub rail and left there while the holder itself can be removed for storage or when not needed. When these get fine tuned they will be another asset to the ice angler.

I went to menards and bought a few of the broom holders that clips a broom to hang on a wall and screwed them to the lip of the tub in front of the seats. Rods fit perfectly in them. I think I spend a grand total of 1.50 on them!!

I have a Clam Voyaguer and i use the green rod holders that you can put on the 5 gallon bucket. But instead of putting on the bucket it can go right on the poles on hte side of where you are sitting. Clip right on. Holds the rod well and easy to use. Slide up and down for different heights. If you get a bite, they don't fall off for lose your rod. Just something that I found that works for me.

There are lots of good options out there.

I really like the yellow Otter Rod Holders. I like how they pivot and you can position them to hold your rod a perfect distance to the hole.

The Rod Rocker & Rod Rocker 2's from Todays Tackle are also sweet! I use a couple of the Rod Rocker 2's in the center of my Otter Lodge- Otter Rod Holders on the sides, Rod Rocker 2's in the middle.

Rod Straps also work great. I've found them to be very useful when fishing out of other peoples shacks who don't have rod holders. Strap them around the pole and I have a rod holder. Perfect!

I made a rod holder out of 1/8” x 3’ steel wire. It’s bent at the top so it hangs over the top pipe of my Fish Trap Pro and bent at the bottom at 90 degrees to the top bend. I strapped a D ring to my pole. I can easily jig the pole, know when I have a strike and the fishing pole can’t be pulled into the water.

If some one would tell me how to post pictures. I can show you what I mean.

Welcome s-man! Take a look at the first post in the photos forum. There is an easy step by step on how to post pictures. I would like to see what you came up with. My uncle and I bought something similar at the store and we modified it to hang on the poles of our houses. They were like $1.50 each.

Not sure if you can still find them. But the Rockn' Reels are the best dead stick rod holder availible that I have ever used. They are able to collapse and tuck way in your sled or gear bag and they are perfect light biting fish. I'm not sure how to get a hold of T-Bone the inventor of these things or if he is even still making them though maybe if anyone is interested someone else can help out with that. He also made a tub mount model but I like the original better because I can take it every where with me. When fishing out of another house I can still have it there.

Here is a pic of the device.

Will put in a vote for each of:

1) Rod Rocker II's, mounted on 1x8's (take everywhere with you, use outside like a windlass tip-down, in the portable, in a permanent, etc.) These are super sensitive tip downs.

2) Rod Straps - attach to side tent poles in the portable, let wind buffet the rod for auto-jigging smile.gif

These two little buggers have increased my ice fishing enjoyment tons. Order them both right from here on FM, orders are processed and sent really fast.

Thanks Gissert I figured you would be the one to know if you could still find them or not. It is really too bad because these are some of the best I have ever used. Hopefully I will never break or loose mine.

Hey s-man, I know this is off topic here but is that a light zip-tied on to one of your shelter poles in your first picture? If it is can you post some details on what kind of light it is, where you got it and how its hooked up? There's a huge thread running right now on lighting up portables and I'm not 100% sold on any of the solutions out there yet. Thanks!

Hi Peepers,

I got the lights at boatersworld for $15. There are 6 leds in the light. I think CaptKev's lights are probably better. I wired it to a 12v 9ah battery I use to run my sonar and it serves ase the backup to my strikemaster electric.

I designed the Rod Straps for all of the portable Ice Houses. They also work on your ATV and snowmobile racks. Quick on-off velcro attaches to any pole. I like to set one next to my outside knee and two above my shoulder. That way they are up in the heat and off the ground. I can instantly switch from one rod to the next. I also have a bucket cip with a strap that attaches to your buckets.

The Rod Rocker 2 is a very nice piece of equipment. Drill 2 holes in your tub lip, place the Rod Rocker 2 in place and put your rod in place. Even your minnows will make the rod tip bob up and down. I even drilled 2 holes in a 2X8 that is 12" long and put the Rod Rocker 2 in place and move it to any hole that I want. The best part is that it pops apart and lays flat for storage! Even the Rod Straps can stay on the poles when you fold up your portable house. The Rod Straps are a buy 2 get 2 FREE right now! I will throw an extra 2 in each order. Everything is available on this site. Or go to www.todaystackle.com

Have fun, Bruce Mosher

I've been using the RR2 by just using ice chips from the auger to hold it in place on the ice....just pack them around the base tines. With a small breeze this set up on open ice is always moving to some degree and makes a deadstick not so dead. And when the hits come, those fish can't feel a bit of resistance. I love using a spring bobber in these holders when the bite gets light....kind of a double whammy and it got three catfish today for me that I would have missed otherwise.
