2006 bps catalog

Just received the 2006 bps master catalog. I was flipping thru the reel section and have noticed that many have added bold colors, and are offering a variety of gear ratios including 7:1. Also noticed the Curado's price seemed to have jumped up to $200.00. That's a big jump from $120.00. Other brands seem to have stayed relatively the same price.

Funny... that is the first thing I noticed in my catalog yesterday. I plan on buying another Curado this year and was shocked to see they changed and are a lot higher price now. We'll see now. I'm a huge Shimano fan, but was not too impressed in what they did with my beloved Curado. Maybe I'll be a sucker and buy the new one and it'll be even better and worth the money!

I won't buy another 10oz reel regardless of who makes it. Technology should be available to make those obsolete. I hear that the Shimano Japan makes a Metanium XT that is essentially the same real but 2 ounces lighter.

wait a second, dont put words in my mouth!!! I too was very disapointed to what they did with the Curado... I wish they wouod have left it alone! The new reel they are calling the curado is nothing like it. I wish they just would have named it something different and left the curado alone.. worlds best selling reel.. if it aint broke dont fix it. However,I have ordered a new curado, the 7.1 gear ratio and plan on making it my new carolina/stupid rig rod.

Fyi, the Cruxsis replaced the Curado and instead of it being $120 its not $100.. so actually its 20 less..

I too got the new BSP cat, and will be paging through it from now till ice out!... Always a great way to pass the time, looking at new crank colors, and styles and plastic styles.

That is exactly what I have been thinking since the word came out last season of the change. It doesn't make much sense to me, but Shimano has sold a few more reels than me so some market research must have convinced them to do it. Maybe the prestige of fishing with a Curado will make "everyday" anglers switch from a top end price point of $130 or so up to $200. Right now for me, I see $130 as a good amount to spend on a good quality reel, but with this season's new advertising most of the companies are moving there advertising emphasis to the $200 or $225 dollar models, not just Shimano. The majority of the new ads I have seen in recent publications for Diawa, Quantum, Pflueger, and Shimano are featuring higher dollar reels. I think I am starting to become one of the conspiracy theory guys crazy.gif

Dietz,

It doesn't make much sense to put that high of a gear ratio on a carolina rig rod. The high speed reel would be better for high speed baits like spinnerbaits and lipless cranks. Your better off with a low speed reel for jig and carolina rig fishing because they have more power. Use a 7 ft rod to slowly work the bait and for sweeping hooksets, the reel is only used to pick up the slack when working the bait. A 6:3 ratio takes in 24 inches of line (when your spool is full) with each turn of the handle. With a 7:1 you will be out of the strike zone before your bait even falls in it.

hmmmm! true, but. although i seldom fish carolina rigs; i have had times when fishing a jig , where the bass would pick the lure up and swim straight at me , and i had to reel like a mad man with a 6:3 trying to catch up so i could set the hook, maybe the 7:0 would help. as you said. you move the lure with the rod and the reel is only for reeling in the slack. i could see a plus .

Mamohr686: I like high speed reels for just about all my fishing now. If you look at the new Quantum and Shimanos you will see that the side plates are extended out and down. Both companys did this to accommodate the large gears that are needed to make a high speed reel, and still have the power, that earlier high speeds lacked. I fished the new Quantum prototype all last year thru the tournament season, both flipping, worming, c-rigging and cranking. These high speed reels are great... And the nice blue color is much prettier than Deitz's brand X... grin.gif sorry Deitz, I had to take the shot. wink.gifWhen I first picked up the prototype it just felt wrong... but once you put it on a rod it feels just as natural as can be. I really like the high speed reels for c-rigging and worming, I move the bait with my rod and then reel down to take up the slack line you create. If you get a pick-up on the end of your rod sweep with a low speed reel you have to reel like a made man, which I think telegraphs to the fish or try a hook set on a slack line, while your stepping backwards to pick-up the slack. These high speeders just make it more efficient to pick up that slack line. And for us right handers that switch the reel to the left hand after every pitch... they are even more efficient.

Wayne-Not that I know of, I havn't had any phone calls on it yet.

FYI, nice shot in that last post blush.gif that will leave a mark. cool.giflaugh.gif

In defence of a high spped reel on a carolina rig rod. I think high speed reels expecially as Agape has stated with the large gears are perfect. THe only job of a reel on a carolina rig rod is to collect the slack from the drag. in my opinion at least. Or at least untill I st the hook and scream "FISH ON", then do my little fish on dance!

I like the high speel reels myself for most applications. It's easier to slow down than speed up.

One thing to look for when you're considering the gear ratio is how many inches are retrieved per handle revolution. This varies greatly between different reels, even if they have the same gear ratio. The new Quantum burner 7.0:1 has the same amount of line retrieval as the 6.3:1 Daiwa Fuego and Pflueger President (28").
