2006 Sturgeon Excursion! - April 21st-

I Da Man

Recommended Posts

I thought I would whip out a post to see if there is any interest in fishing for some...um..."big fish" this coming April?

We're putting together the 2006 Sturgeon Excursion (hopefully an annual event). Anyone and everyone is welcome!

[Note from Rick]

Here's a little clip on our sturgeon excursion last spring.

The tenitive date is April 16th for two, possibly 3 nights. The cost per night will run about $30. Once we have a count, we'll be looking for the best price in lodging. The drive is about 6 hours from the Twin City Metro area.

We will be fishing the Minnesota side of the Rainy River. You can buy the canada license although there's really no need.

Heavy bass equipment will do.... muskie / cat stuff will help you land these fish a little quicker. I'll have a Garcia 6500 and a 7000 for back up. I also have 4 extra Flathead set ups if someone needs to borrow them.

Going by past years, the average days have put 20-30 fish in a boat with most of them running in the 40-50 inch range. The season is catch and release only.

Terminal tackle is small hooks made of very strong wire. 2/0 is as large you'll need.

I'll post the hook numbers once I receive that info. 1-3 oz weights will be plenty. One rod allowed on the Rainy River.

You don't need to be a sturgeon expert to catch these prehistoric critters. A picture of you with your arms full of sturgeon is going to look very good on your desk or on your wall!

Please post your interest in joining us and, if you have any questions post them also, I'll get back to you asap.

I have been urgin for sturgeon since last april! Me and three buds went up last spring for the walleyes but missed it by about a week. We figured out the sturge on the last day after witnessing other boats catch a few[some guys in a river pro, FMrs I think?]. All we caught was a sturge and a pout. We were out of Wheelers point in Baudette MN. They definatly had excess apacity to handle a sturgeon excursion event at that time[in your quoted price range]. Seemed like the sturgeon were doing ok despite the turbid water that made walleye fishing very difficult. There were quire a few boats out at the mouth of the river. We are going to get a bunch of crawlers and rig our musky stuff with 40lb mono for this spring. Sorry for ranting very interested!

dtro, don't think about it too long...that's why you didn't make the cat trip. wink.gif

Two things I can promise. 1) I'm bringing extra knives along for cut bait...and 2) I'm done kissing Dennis...still haven't got that taste off my lips...paaa toooweee! grin.gif

Hanson...does "Uh-Duh" mean your eating dinner, your mouth is full and it really means "I'm in!"?

Well I did'nt say anything about it needing to be, and most certainly it does not have to be, please excuse me if you thought the question baited with a big juicy wad of crawlers dosed wih crayfish scent! Just curious. The date is kinda the off season up in these parts, get a plannin soon eh. I could maybe do some snoopin around. Iffin I remember right I really did'nt hear a hoot 1 about last years little shindig till it was pretty much done and over with and I kinda felt a little left out of the loop!....Sob and sigh!

Depending on a few things I may make just try and make it eh. As always it is the time of year, pond or river, I will for sure be quite near anyhow.

Best regards.....fiskyknut

Yo Brian I see you have put some additional info on your original post since my fist look. You seem to have ducks in line. Would I have to stay at whatever place you'all round up in order to attend, or could I just spin by for a day or 2 or 4? Heck I live here and don't really do the motel/resort thing all too often in my own backyard ya know! Shorebound sleeperhouses on my land near Wheelers, or a friends place in Baudette works much better for my budget iffin I'm gonna need to crash!!!

No problem! And I didn't mean to come of like you were implying anything...the written word...Maybe we can talk who ever handles this...into getting more Instant Graemlins! grin.gif

Anyway...I wasn't a part of last years event...so I didn't even hear about it! We are in the same boat bud!

Fishy, as long as you make it and I'm allowed to shake your hand...it doesn't matter where you stay...or anyone else for that matter. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

Just so there isn't any misunderstanding...I'm not gooing to put you on "the list"...just because we're using that for a rooming guide. Ok?

However...I may want to talk to you about where the best rates are ect...but I can't figure out how to send ya a pm! wink.gif

Dark? Where do you get carp smilies from?

Dennis can you snatch pics from other forums and move them here? Buddy of mine Mike, aka 'diehard' got that 117# last spring. That pic is on the Rainy river forum. Don't know how long they stay viable on the site but between the river and LOTW forums there are/were dozen's of nice Sturgeon photos posted over the years. Maybe some links to past spring seasons Sturgeon threads from those forums would be cool too, info on Sturgeon fishing up here, tips and location info, as well as pics all rolled into one could spark more inerest too maybe?

Yes I am that slow on this laptops keyboard, took me that long! Makes me wonder how I can at times be so longwinded on some topics too! Keyboard needs some reconfigure too.

I'll maybe have people up piking then so I'm up in the air as to making it for sure. I'm glad you won't put me on any list, I'm already on a list with the majority of FM's Cool-Cats-Crew here already do to prior long and windies on a couple of threads I'd reckon! lol!

fiskyknut at yahoo.....2 'K's in der.

Okay then, what's 1 more list! Can't keep up with folks' screen names either apparently, need to spend a bit more time on those mn river/miss/metro forums.

I missed the trip to the Rainy last year due to my wife being on pegs but there is NO way Stu is going to get across that border without me next spring. I am not sure of the dates but Stu and I were talking about a couple of boats from up here heading down next Apr.

One has to practise up for our kitties. Sure hope our weekends match up. When do U need confirmation dates etc.

I've been thinking about doing this for the last 5 years. Everything that I have read and heard says that this is relatively brainless fishing. Just my speed.

Count my daughter and I as maybes. Gotta find out what weekend confimation is and when the enduro season starts.

Well barnyard if you like that simple hook/line/sinker fishing and catching WHOPPER fishes while doing it you owe it to yourself to come on up to the Great NW of our state for sure. Not only do we have the relatively brainless fishing spring and fall for the Rainy river Sturgeonfish,.....The King of Minnesota's Gamefishes!grin.gif We also have partways brainless fishing for way BIG Channel Catfish on the banks of the mighty Red River of the North thru the summer, and some fine and somewhat brainless springtime fishing for nice BIG Pike on the LOTW too.

Man oh man you are sure to like them Sturgeonfish.
