Holy Cow -- Anyone see that PIGGY pulled out of White Bear

It might rival a record if it lives another 10 years..

yes, it was a pig with a ton of girth... but saying that fish may have weighed 40# is stretching it.. has a long ways to go to be a record.

52.5 - now dont get me wrong thats a huge fish (bigger than my best for sure). but its not that close to the record.......

It's the news. It needs to be a big deal, they also called it a Big Mouth Musky in the article. laugh.gif I have caught alot of musky through the years but have never caught a big mouth musky, and I'm a big mouthed musky fisherman. wink.gif

My biggest to date 57 x 26 was calculated by Larry Ramsell at 49.8 pounds -- Huge fish and still not a TRUE 50 pounder?

That 52.5" fish would have had to have the girth of Mike Tice's head to reach 50 pounds. ;-)

Still a nice fish and thanks for letting her go.

Big mouthed musky - oh i see - so does that mean that we all have been fishing for the small mouthed version? so when i am thinking my 12inch jake is too small for the small mouthed musky - going to need a 30 incher to start this new "big mouth musky" fishin.

better start another forum.........

I thought that the low 50"'s weighed in around the low to mid 30lbs. I am just wondering. I have nothing but congrats and envy for to dude that caught that fish - truely awesome!!! But if anybody could give me a length/weight convertion for a few numbers that would be great.

Thanks - The Prodigy

This talk of "big mouthed" muskies reminds me of when my brother bought his fishing license last year. The question he was asked when he bought his license was if he harvested any "big toothed" bass last year. So there are two rare species that are swimming in our waters. Not only the big mouthed muskies but also the big toothed bass!

Not so good at the catch'n em part, but man I love to chase them. Maybe you could teach me a thing or two there Jon... haha

One thing to remember about this story, it came from the media, without the typical media frabrication it never would have made the news in the first place. These reporters have no idea what this fish is, much less the size and typical "nicknames" we give them. I take the information provided in the article for the small grain of salt it's worth and just drool over the picture of such a beast out of one of our local inter city lakes.

I'm sure the guy that caught the fish laughed histarically when he seen the segment on the news. Just like everything else in this world the media over exaggerated...

The conversion I use for muskies and pike (seems accurate for walleyes, too) is one that I got here on FM: length x girth x girth / 800 = weight.

Not sure how somebody developed that but it has proven to be quite accurate.

Using the length x girth x girth / 800 = weight and giving the fish a 52.5" length and weight of 50lbs, the formula says the fish only has to have a 27.6" girth. thats realistic, isn't it as long as i did my math right...

There was a 52" musky pulled from Mille Lacs a couple of years ago that weighed 50#. The state record from Winnie was 57" I believe (54#). It really depends on time of year, but you have to have girth to get the weight. Length is important, but I have seen some 42 to 44 inch fish that were approaching 35#. Tankers.

That story makes me wonder if someone they interviewed told them it was called a Big Mouthed musky to be funny. Or were they just that creative? LOL either way!
