Another amazing trip to the mighty Red River! Fishing started out very slow on monday and tuesday, but around 5 in the evening a torrid bite began, corks, bottom fishing, continued until you coun't take it anymore and started out the same way on wednesday morning. The cat bite is in full swing. Even ran into "Backwater Eddy" up there and can now put a face to the name, Ed has always been straight forward with his information on this board and in person he's the same, he has some time in on the river, also of course Stu, and Canuck and gang are simply the best and lots of fun. If you get the chance go there now!

Very cool!

Dark 30, BrianK, BlackSportsman and myself will be heading up this saturday for 3 days of belly bruising, sore arm fun!

Hope that bite continues, of course even a slow bite can be better than most rivers around here.

How is the water running? Any prefered bait we should have?

Did Stu get his sunnies? wink.gif

Have fun guys!! Wish I could be there!!

If fishing gets slow, talk Manny into falling asleep and you'll get a run ASAP!! Or talk him into vertical jigging a really large 'golden shiner' and it'll be Fish On!!! smirk.gif

I'm jealous! It only takes about 10 of those monsters to wear you out. The sauger/walleye bite should be happening soon too, but who has time for that. Don't forget to try the night bite. We had a blast fishing off Stu's dock last trip up. I've said this before, but after bouncing around in the boat all day it was nice to kick back in a lawn chair with a lantern & a couple of beers. The cats were very active after dark. Have fun. - Vern

Shef: Thanks for those blue gills and Dar says thanks as well. Don't want to rub it in but the bite today (Thursday) got better. Had 2 rods out today and in the morning we really lost count but it was diffently over 20. The afternoon started out fast and furious but died about 2PM then we went huntin and only found 2 but about 4 then turned on again. I have NO idea how many were over 20lbs but I am sure we could not have carried them out of the boat. One guy was tuckered out and finally said I quit as he was beat up, blisters on his hands and sore arms.

Dennis, Dark 30 I don't know if I will be able to hook up with U guys or not but would love to share a beer over some lies if nothing else. I think today was my last day on the river for cats as I am off next week moose huntin.

Remember it may be fall but do NOT use too little weight. In place today I was using 6 oz and almost switched to 8. In fact before I left tonight I gave Stu all my 6s and 8s. Yes I did use 3s in a few places as well.

Shef, Good Old George ended up with 68 kitties in 3 days, not bad for 83 hey. I really would love to spend an evening in your boat some nite. Take care and have a GREAT winter.

Jim.

Good luck on your Moose hunt Canuck, sounds like you'll be having fun even with out those fish you like so much. Hopfully you will have some nice fall like weather when you go to pack that meat and caped head out too!

I have a question for you, I found a couple of Berkley rods a guy I know is looking to get rid of, he told me they are long like 9 foot, white baitcast types he used for trolling labled 'HARDROCK'. Are these maybe the same rods as you mentioned liking some time back? If so I may just nab them, I have not seen them but his description was as above anyhow.

Ha!

Almost too wired to sleep just waiting to get up there! Besides, I'm sure I'll have plenty of time to rest on day 2, while I'm nursing my wounds from playing with 20 lb channels from the day before grin.gif

Once again we had a great time.

When we arrived we talked to a few folks that had been there the prior week and were told it was slow.

"Slow" is a relative term. Yes it was a little slow compared to other times I have made the trip but the fishing is still by far better than back home.

We did best on the nite bite with steady action and fish ranging from the mid teens all the way up to 25lbs.

Cut tulibee was working best but I managed a couple fish on frogs.

Fish seemed to be holding in most area's. We would pick up a fish or two at most locations. The main channel produced best for us during the day however there wer fish holding at just about every spot we tried.

Our best fishing was from the dam down to Cats on the Red after dark. We just fished the channel breaks or the current edges in the wash of the dam.

The folks up there were very helpfull and Stu, his guides and Canuck shared any tips they could with us. Thanks guys!

Canuck let me borrow one of those HardRock rods. I thought it would make an excellent circle hook rod so I left it rigged up for you to try! LOL

Another successful trip up to Cats on the Red.

Here are a few pics.

Blacksportsman showed us all up, probably outfishing us all 2 to one and catching the biggest fish of the trip. Here is Manny with his 25lber

My good buddy Briank with a very nice fish from up by the dam.

What a trip!! I had an awesome time fishing with Dennis, Kevin, and Brian up on the Red at Lockport. These are some top-notch catters and all-around good guys to fish with. Thanks again for bringing me along. It was also nice to finally meet Stu and Jim (Canuck), thanks for the tips and current info on the Red.

Even though all the regulars kept saying how "slow" the bite had been, it was some of the best cattin' action I've ever had and for me, there was never a dull moment. I almost didn't make it this year, but I'm sure glad I did. Looking forward to next year!

Nice cats guys!

Slow there is still WAY better then 99.9% of any other channel cat fishery...so slow will do at times too...Eh.

wink.gif

I just missed ya guys. If I could I would have hung around and fished with your crew for a day. Next time!!

Its always fun to fish with the real pros...you just don't know what you'll get when you get your film back.

fishingwiththepros.jpg

Fishing at Stu's Playground in Selkirk is truly a top notch destination for the serious catter! I still can't get used to all the metric stuff though. You'd think you could drive 60 miles per hour or set the thermostat to 65 degrees but no. Then you got the money. I guess it somehow works in our favor but it still costs too much when you get home to the wife....that reminds me...Would my wife be older or younger in Canada..EH? grin.gif
